OLD-TYME MEDICINE SHOWS!

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Hello, fellow Sparkers!

The good Lord is giving us today, so, let's make the best of it!

Today I want to ask all of you, if you, or have you heard of the medicine shows in years past?

They were heard of and/or seen in the 40's. I can remember as a mere child attending these with my parents. They were held in the summer as you will see. A traveling troop will desend on our town and pitch a tent in an open lot. There the families from around the area would gather in the early evening. We would set on benches, and be entertained with jokes [family style], hear singing and watch dancing [again, family style].

At the end of the entertainment, they would try to sell their 'magic portions]. Much like the so-called 'snake oils' of times before that. That was a much anticiaped summer passing of eve.. They would stay for a week at a time.

Ahhh, the 'good old days!

Be safe and have a terrific day!
Janet

Yeah-I've heard of theses but how great that you have actual memories of them. I had heard that they were gypsies too....and most of their "medicine" was alcoholic.

I remember such a show. They were referred to as gypsies and the rumour was they would steal the children. They also would tell fortunes. I know it made me stick to my Mom's side and not wander. emoticon

I always think of Aunt Bee on The Andy Griffith Show, when one of these guys came around with his magic elixer and Andy came in to find a house full of drunk women. LOL
