Leave the house to get in shape

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

My son grew up overweight with bad knees. While his knees did keep him from playing sports or even marching in band, it was his mother and I that failed to control his weight. It is just hard to give your kids something you don’t have. My house was a great place to play, but not a good place to stay in shape.

Over the past four years he has had increasingly radical knee surgeries. Thanks to God, good insurance and a cutting edge surgeon my son’s knees are now 95%. He can do most activities. (The surgeon pioneered a new procedure with his knees which he is now using with pro athletes). My son also left for collage at the beginning of the school year and was frustrated with the social implications of being overweight. He decided to take charge and has lost 65 pounds and added significant muscle mass (he joined a weight lifting club). I am proud of him for his amazing accomplishment and challenged to do likewise.

I was talking to him about my new goal to log all of my meals. He challenged me to start taking pictures of everything I eat as an additional incentive/deterrent to eat right. I am going to try it, but before I commit I need to see how time consuming it is.

My son is being a role model for me. Pretty cool.

I took pics today. A daily post would be to much, so I will try for a weekly photo blog.

Wow! What an amazing chap your son is, your proud and quite rightly so. Now come on mike, do the decent thing and take up his challenge! You must have a smart phone, right? It will take less time to take a picture on that than it will to swallow a mouthful of food! And yes at the end of the week you will have a picture log of all your healthy choices;) What a wise head on young shoulders! He will be so proud of you. Get clicking, NO excuses!

    GOOD LUCK! emoticon

Your son is truly inspiring. His idea about taking pictures of the food is a great one. I'm going to try this. Looking at a visual food diary could really show what I eat in a scary sort of way.

pretty awesome for your son. role models come in all shapes/sizes and ages. If you have a phone with a camera...you're set. if not...hummm, I'll have to think about it.

What a wonderful job your son has done. Such an inspiration!

Good luck with the challenge - or just tracking if photos take too much time.
