I gave up EXCUSES for Lent!

Thursday, February 23, 2012

I was looking at all the reasons I seem to find that I “can’t” get things done. Simple, weight loss basics like getting in my water every day, eating my fruits and veggies and getting at least 10 minutes of exercise a day. I decided that for Lent, I’m giving up Excuses.

There can’t be any kind of excuse that justifies most of these things, so to turn around the “giving up,” I decided to make it a positive twist and find a way to make these things happen.

Yesterday was day one. I filled my water bottle at work and drank 2 of them (water-done!). I snacked on cherry tomatoes and carrots at my desk, had peaches with my lunch and a big salad along with my dinner (fruits/veggies – done!).

Then it was time to exercise. I have a gym membership, but the gym is really inconveniently located and it was getting late. We redid the family room in the basement and set it up so we wouldn’t have an excuse not to workout. I spent every day in January down there doing the January Jumpstart Challenge. I didn’t miss a day. I was so proud of myself, felt great and thought the habit was there. February came, I didn’t have an assigned video a day, and the excuses came out of the woodwork. Yes, we are busy with 2 kids on 3 different teams, the house is a mess, my aging parents need me constantly and we have had one party or basketball tournament after another for the entire month, but really, I couldn’t find 10 minutes? So, last night, the family went in to watch American Idol and I said “don’t wait for me, I’ve got to workout tonight.” My daughter gave me a high five and a big smile and off I went.

My plan was to do one of the upper body videos because we’ve had a stomach bug going around the house and I didn’t feel all that great. I did the video and that was all I needed! I searched again and decided to try and finish one of the other Challenges that I started and didn’t finish. I did the January one starting on a Sunday, so I made myself go back to Day One and do the 4 videos to catch me up for the week. I felt fantastic! I did both strength videos and a kickboxing video to get some added cardio in. I had taken a break earlier in the day and went up to the top floor at work and then went up and down the stairs to get in about 8 minutes at work, so it all added up.

I emerged from the basement an hour later after drinking another 4 glasses of water and getting in a great workout. I grabbed an orange and then relaxed.

Mission accomplished! My kids know I gave up excuses for Lent now, so I know the oldest will help keep me in line with working out, and I’m munching on carrots as I type this, so my mind is in the right place.

40 days of no excuses will hopefully get these habits imbedded into my life so they won’t find their way back again.
