A Heart Healthy journey

Monday, March 05, 2012

I am so proud of my husband. After he was discharged Fri night, he has begun his new journey on getting healthy. Our son drove in Fri to sit with me while DH underwent a cardiac catheterization. He spent the night with us before heading back to the coast.

I came up with idea of giving DS all of our "unhealthy" food. Usually, this is something I would pack up. But in the interest of time, I asked DH to do it (so I could get my fitness in). That wound up being the best decision I ever made! DH packed up the potato chips, sausages, and even his "secret stash" he had hidden in the garage. Supposedly so I wouldn't be tempted!

Mind you, none of these food items were mine...I am not even tempted by them. But I believe it was a good cleansing act for DH. Esp giving up his secret stash. Lil' Debbie is NOT your heart's friend! lol

Yesterday, we stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few items he thought he needed. I didn't really think we needed to...after all, we had just gone shopping a few days ago and I had stocked up on stuff for me. We bought some fresh produce, healthy snack items and whole wheat bread.

One of our friends who had visited during the hosp stay had mentioned shopping the perImeter wall. That is exactly where he shopped! And he was reading labels, educating himself on good nutrition. It really was the best 30 min we spent in the store. Maybe it WAS a good thing we didn't need anything else! This allowed him to shop and learn without the pressure of time!

I am so proud of him! I have high hopes that he will be successful and will lose weight in his journey. And hopefully, we'll enjoy another 30 years together!

Thanks to all you SP friends who sent messages during this ordeal. It was much appreciated! We have a great community and I am SO glad to be part of it! Spark on!

What a great blog. I love that you saw the necessity to take the back seat, right away, on his recovery. I really love that he has grabbed the wheel, so to speak. I think you are so right that it was a great first exercise for him to clear out the house of all that unhealthy stuff. I have had an ongoing "food fight" with my dh for many years. His father died of heart failure in his late 30's and my husband is in his late 40's. Granted, he does not drink or smoke so that is a huge advantage but nutrition is something he has largely ignored, despite, or because of, my pleas. I have learned to back off, and sure enough, he is making some changes. I wish you two decades of love and health and happiness emoticon

The journey to health has to be easier with both of you working on it than only one of you! Best wishes to both of you for success on that journey.

YAYAYAY my hubby wont eat any raw stuff, other than a bit of lettuce. HE was told long ago that for his IBS not to eat raw, well that is about the only thing that the dietican told him that he really goes by. ARGH anyway great going Hubby, glad you have him on board.

Getting our DH's on board a healthier eating lifestyle is not easy to do.......I learned a long time ago the less said the better.....that way no matter what he comes up with like wheat bread instead of white or more veggies for dinner are all his ideas....the shopping you and your DH did was just what was needed for him (I know you know this), but good job on just letting it happen.....everyone learns at there own pace.
Enjoy your day and have a healthy week......... emoticon

It is a really, really good sign that he is actively making these decisions, and not just letting you choose the heart healthy foods -- he is truly involved in his own opportunity to make healthful changes. That seems very promising to me.
Best of luck to you both:)

I'm glad he saw this as a wake-up call. Mine loves sausage perhaps more than me! emoticon He really eats pretty well overall. That's just a huge downfall for him. He does run a little. I hope we can inspire them from all our good choices. Glad he's doing well.
