Watching the phones

Tuesday, May 01, 2012

Today I'm hanging out in the Family Promise office answering phones. The director is on vacation and they needed some coverage. I can handle taking messages - worked at a telephone answering service in college - remember those? The heartbreaking thing is the messages!!!
In case you aren't familiar - Family Promise is a country wide organization of volunteers from all faiths. Their one goal is to help homeless families with children become self-sustaining again. My job today is to simply answer the phone and take messages from people looking for help. These are people who are just simply victims of the present economy. Things happen like a domino effect - one of them gets sick or gets laid off and the downward spiral begins.
I am always grateful for my blessings but a day in here makes you know how lucky you really are. I've always been the glass half full kind of person. No matter what, I can look adversity in the eye and know that something better will rise from the ashes of whatever just happened. And like many of us - lots of stuff has happened.
I think seeing the positive side keeps you centered and also from falling into despair. All I have to do now is keep the positive focus on my weight loss journey...
