Spotted A New Lizard

Monday, May 07, 2012

We were on our way to the ranch, and we pulled off the road to check on Mama Hawk, and her babies. Mama was on a branch near the nest

Daddy was on a pole just a bit down from the tree.

And we only saw one of the babies

We were on our way to the ranch so we drove on. We got to the main road that leads to the ranch when we spotted a Lizard we have never seen before. Actually we saw two of them, but only one cooperated...for two photos anyway.
At first we thought they were Alligator Lizards because of the long tail, but the pattern in the Lizard, and its face looked different. I hope to find out what type of Lizard it is.

Alice was so excited we were going to the ranch. She kept poking my DH in the shoulder because he just wasn't driving fast enough for her. I had to take her picture. Her face says it all!

I didn't get any pictures of the barn yard pals today because I was brushing the horses. Trying to get rid of their winter coat. Especially on Star. She has so much hair she looked like a Bison trying to shed lol. We left the ranch, got back on the dirt road, when I spotted a Long Tail Grackle.

Just a bit down the road I spotted beautiful trees. Sorry, I don't know what they are. I'm hoping one of you will know hehe

I spotted a Brewer's Blackbird. I love the color of their eyes against their black feathers.

I spotted the cutest mailbox.

Further down the road was a Raven

Just a bit from that spot my DH spotted a Red Tail Hawk flying around

I lost sight of the Hawk for a bit, and was just ready to get back into the car, when I spotted it again. After I got home, and downloaded the picture, I realized it was a different Hawk. To be honest, I have no idea what type it is. It looks like it has a reddish tail, but the stripes on the chest puzzle me. Plus Red Tail Hawks have a line (underneath) on the top portion of their wings, and this bird doesn't have that. I will have to get a couple of my friends who know more then I do, to take a look at the bird. Hopefully they will know.

We went back and checked on the Hawks again. We saw both babies this time.

There was a hawk on the pole again. We think it was the male, and another Hawk was flying off in the distance.

While we were sitting in the car, a bird was on a wire just singing away. I think it is a Purple Finch.

Today my DH was walking Sarge in the open desert, when he came across a Killdeer. He took a pic of it. We thought we saw it flying around there yesterday when we were walking around. This is a water bird. How funny to find it hanging around in the open field.

lovely photos ..... i wish i could come spend a couple of days with you & go on those drives/hikes with my Canon.

the wildlife you get to see so much of are a delight.

as for the tree, i'm guessing either Twilight Crape Myrtle or Jacaranda Mimosifolia.

and you're delightful to share them with us.

Ohhhh our babies are growing so fast! In a few weeks' time, the hawks will be gone... I could almost not recognize them!
I loved those pink/purple trees, but I don't know what they are. Gorgeous!
The lizard looked almost scary to me... I know they are harmless but I can't help it!
But what I loved the most was Alice's face and the story of how excited she was... this is so cute!
Thank you for a lovely blog, Jeanne!

One of my young friends, Harry, is into lizards and looked this up for you. He thinks it's a Coastal Whiptail Lizard (Aspidoscells tigris stejnegeri) common in the Californian desert regions...if you google it you can see if you think he's right. I can't make it go straight to it on the link but this is it
    Lovely pictures by the way...lol...

Sorry I don't know what your mystery tree is, but it's beautiful! Could the mystery hawk be a juvenile red tail? And that Killdeer........don't they nest on the ground? Could have had a nest nearby. They will feign broken wing to lead you away from their nest! ( I am pretty sure I have the right bird with this info.) The bird you think is a purple finch.....I'd have to agree. Looks like it to me! That lizard.......beautiful. Reminds me of Joanna the Goanna from the "The Rescuers; Down Under"!!!
Great pics, none the less! You have a great eye!

I just caught up on your blogs and just doing this one comment-can't believe I am so behind in them! I think one reason is I subscribe to your blogs and for some reason SP stopped notifying me of them being there. Sigh!
There is that alien looking baby hawk again! What an interesting looking lizard! And that tree is gorgeous! Even that last pink tree in a previous blog was beautiful, but don't know what they are unfortunately .
I just love your blogs-you always have such a good variety of things to talk about/photos in them! And love the birds especially! You have given me a greater appreciation of them and I thank you for that!! emoticon emoticon

It fascinates me that you just see lizards out in the wild! Such a plethora of animals you get to see all the time! Of course, I get nervous hiking by myself sometimes because I worry about grizzlies and cougars! I don't want to get any pictures of those thank you! (never seen either in person thank goodness)

Is that lizard as large as it looks?

When we take Piper to the river for her long walks & romps, she gets more excited the closer we get now. She knows the route and she is usually almost in the front seat by the time we arrive. It is one the favorite parts for me!

Your area is so rich in wildlife. It's a treat to see your pictures, because some of the things (Joshua trees, lizards, some types of birds) you don't see in Illinois. I loved the look of that baby hawk against it's Mama's chest in the nest. It looked so goofy and sweet.

Great pics! So glad you are brushing out the horses. Ron's friend never ever brushes hers and they get so itchy! I feel sorry for them.
That tree might be a crape myrtle. Sure looks like one.
I love the lizards! We get a few here, too.
