Family Meeting #1

Sunday, May 13, 2012

We held our first family meeting and I think it was a success. At least as much of a success as it can be with a 4 year old and a 2 year old. Today we discussed what it means to be healthy. My 4 year old was quick to announce eating healthy and exercising. The 2 year old echoed her. We talked about watching TV less and playing and learning more; they weren't opposed to that idea, lol. We then talked about getting out the chore chart and potty chart. Charlie, the oldest, was disappointed that she didn't have another form to earn stickers for, so we decided she would also have a weekly homework sticker chart to add stickers when she does her homework. This might help add incentive to some of her school areas she struggles in.

We also talked about menu planning. Today I bought a slotted wall organizer to hang some binders in. One will be for the girls, one for menu planning and I haven't decided what the 3rd will be, but I'm positive it won't stay empty. For menu planning we talked about healthy foods. Charlie again was quick to list off a bunch of healthy fruits and veggies. I had each family member request 1 dinner for the week. Chicken nuggets was the first, so I'll make them homemade, and bake them to make them healthier. Pizza is on the list, as is a chicken broccoli rice bake. Manwich sloppy joes is on the list, and depending on time I'll either make it out of the can or look for a recipe to make them homemade. Right now I'm focusing on making one meal healthier each week, and chicken nuggets is for this week. I'll monitor my motivation and sloppy joes might be a future healthy recipe adjustment. Next on my agenda is creating a list of recipes for my husband, since I keep my recipe store in my head. And I will be researching menu planning organizing tips to find the one that is right for us.

We talked about summer reading, which I've found most programs haven't started yet, so that's a project I'll be flagging to keep an eye on so we can get started. I already have a reading list chart printed out so we can start recording our books when we are ready, and I have the girls signed up for the Scholastic summer reading program.

We concluded our meeting with family dance time. I did my dancing seated since my knee is acting up (making an appointment for the Dr tomorrow). Tomorrow we will get a start on our new charts and programs and next Sunday we'll have another meeting to see how things are working and make adjustments from there.

It sounds like you're off to a great start. Good idea incorporating the kids into the planning!

That sounds good, and just about what I was planning on doing, except mine will be dried, dipped in flour, then dipped in an egg/milk mixture, then dipped in a seasoned panko before baking. I'll have to check nutritional value on the different variations of homemade nuggets and see which one is the best for us. Thanks for sharing!! :)

I have a great, fairly-healthy recipe for chicken "nuggests": mix one cup of Italian bread crumbs with 2/3 cup grated parmesan cheese. Rinse and dry chicken strips, dip in melted margarine and then coat well with mixture. Bake on cookie sheet at 350 degrees about 20-25 mins, until lightly-browned. Yummy!
