Over doing it and getting frustrated!!!

Monday, May 21, 2012

So, two big parts of healthy living are fitness and diet...right. Not the only things, but two big parts. So, if you've been following me you know my knee is acting up. I was told by a Dr to take Ibueprofen and only ambulate as much as my knee will tolerate. That was fine, I gave up my nightly walk with the family in favor of chilling on the couch with my leg up. So now my fitness has been interrupted by my knee.

Yesterday I went to the store and took on my diet. I payed attention to my spark diet meal plans and added in the recipes for dinner the family chose for the week. Yesterday I bought all the food I needed, which filled my fridge with fruits and veggies and other healthy stuff. Then I spent the afternoon baking bread, making pizza, preparing my lunch and making salsa to eat through the week...I found to eat healthy for what I want it takes a lot of work. Today my knee is KILLING me! So my knee is now trying to take over my healthy eating plans. Grrrrrr. Can't wait for these two weeks to be over so I can go back to the Dr and tell him we need to try something different.

In positive news today, I averted soda disaster. I was sooooo tempted to pull into Sonic for a coke, I came so close but decided last minute to drive on by thinking of all the good food and snacks I would have to give up just for an hour of sugary drink. I miss my soda for now, but I'm sure that will go away soon.

Thanks CEKER9, I was going on the instructions of ambulating as much as my knee would tolerate, and since I normally cook and shop with no issues and it didn't hurt when I was cooking or shopping, I figured I'd be fine. Normally my pain only comes when I do extra walking, such as going around the block or walking the park. It surprised me this time because those things never bothered me before and my knee has been bad for a month now. I'm noticing my knee will tolerate less and less as the days go by, so I'm thinking something more than the Dr originally thought is up and I'll be heading back there in another week to get his thoughts. Being a stay at home mom with 2 little ones makes it VERY difficult to stay on the couch with my knee up. The girls are normally pretty good, but some days I find myself constantly chasing them and cleaning up after them. Thanks for the motivational words!

Ambulating means walking and can apply to exercise and being on the feet (knee) while shopping, putting food away, and cooking. You may not be walking distances, but you are on your feet and walking short distances and actually can be worse because of turning from the sink to the counter to the stove to the refrigerator and may twist the knee.

Now that you have learned that ambulating mean more than exercise, when you prepare your meal plans also take into consideration how much time is spent on your feet. You may be able to do all the same work... just make sure that you elevate your legs at regular intervals for resting while something is cooking or bring your cutting board and other items to a chair where you can prepare your vegetables (or other food) while your foot is elevated. It can be done.

Averting your soda disaster is *VERY* positive... three cheers!!!
