Amazing Sandwich Bread Recipe!
Thursday, May 24, 2012
For the past couple of months I've expanded my homemaker status to include bread maker. I'd never baked bread before so it was new. I looked up some sandwich bread recipes online and for the one's I tried, they were too dense, didn't rise well and dried out quickly. The flavor was good, but these breads were white, not whole wheat, so that was another problem I found.
Then I came back to SparkPeople. This week for my healthy family makeover challenge my job was to start giving my meals a healthy makeover. Since it was time to bake bread again, I figured I'd check out some bread recipes on SparkRecipes to see what I could find. I weeded through a few and couldn't find what I wanted, then I ran into this one: recipes.sparkpeople.com/
Wow, it is AMAZING! It rises nicely, makes a good sized sandwich bread as opposed to quickbread size. And, it's whole wheat! With 6 cups of whole wheat flour, I love it! Remember, I'm a novice bread maker, so as I was making this bread I kept worrying that I was overdoing it with the bread flour I added in. It seemed that no matter how much bread flour I added in, the dough remained sticky. I still ended with a slightly sticky dough (I'm used to it being smoother), but I decided to run with it and see what happened. I'm all about making mistakes to learn from. So I let it rise again, then baked it and wow. I can't say wow enough! It was light, airy and so so soft. My only beef with it was the ease it produced crumbs when cutting, but for the soft texture I can live with that. My entire family loves the bread, even my 2 and 4 year old.
I am keeping this one in my recipe box and I hope I can make it just as good the next time!
