What a Difference One Year with Spark Makes!

Monday, July 16, 2012

Both last and this year my husband and I took a trip to Beaver Falls, Pa for a long weekend. Last year blood sugar was not in good control, energy level had to crawl up a ladder to get in the gutter, weight 30 pounds up, exercise levels way down – it was a chore to help with the bags, go for ice and everything else.

After last year’s trip I knew something was definitely not good. A trip to the doctor confirmed my worst fear that my diabetes was progressing. Being diagnosed as insulin resistant in my twenties and finally placed on oral meds 20 + years later, it should not have been a surprise after another10 years this disease was trying to take control. That was not going to happen.

My first two steps were to increase my activity with Sparkpeople followed by a visit to the doctor’s office. Always controlling my bs as much as possible through diet and exercise, I was determined to use my support teams to better understand other aspects of this disease.

The Sparkpeople support teams and information have saved my life. I am still soaking-up and putting to use the incredible information and support provided by Team members. The Team members are so informative and helpful, but most of all they have been there and I feel I can share the good, bad and ugly with them and not be judged.

This year, back to goal weight and blood sugar in control, I packed 2 coolers with delicious veggies and fruits, grilled chicken and water. Also had back-up breakfasts (which I ate 2 of the 3 days). Our routine is to go out to Texas Roadhouse for steak dinner – I had chicken breast and did not feel deprived; nite 2 is always a burger – I had a salmon dish and eve 3 had roasted chicken. Most interesting is that the food was delicious and enjoyable. Hmmmm – guess I have changed my eating habits for the good!! Thank you Team.

First thing each morning was a walk, which was most enjoyable. My energy level remained high, last year’s chores were not work at all to me this year. Thank you Team again! Your inspiration and motivation has apparently helped me to change my exercise habits too!! Having high energy again is truly a gift.

On another happy note there was no more thinking “do I look fat?”.

What would have become of my health without Spark is not a pleasant thought. Thank you Spark person for starting this website. You have no idea of difference you have made in one person’s life.
