Salt is the devil!

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Maybe that's strong language. Let me preface. I've carefully watched salt intake during my third trimester (generally have kept intake to below 2000 mg a day) to avoid negative side effects. I'm 37 weeks and have credited my low blood pressure (100/60) and lack of issue with edema, etc. to this.

Yesterday, I had my baby shower. It was a lot of fun and we had it catered. The food wasn't exactly healthy (think Italian comfort food). Delicious, carby, fatty, and definitely salty. I ate my share and maybe a little more than my share emoticon. According to spark, I wasn't so far over the recommended daily allowance, but enough (probably about 3500 mg total).

So to make a long story short, I had a very tough night. My fingers and feet swelled up by about 9, I was thirsty non stop, overly fatigued (even for night!), restless, and essentially miserable. I've been hydrating nonstop and have had next to no salt at breakfast and lunch. Insidious how you can abandon the saltshaker but it sneaks in anyway in your bread, etc.! The symptoms are nearly gone now, but after this and getting to experience the contrast, I needed to share: if you aren't watching the sodium tracker, try it!! emoticon
