I was reading an article in the local paper today about happiness. There was a philosopher quoted as listing his rules for happiness as follows: SOMETHING TO DO, SOMEONE TO LOVE, AND SOMETHING TO HOPE FOR.
Another rather well known individual stated, :Happiness is not ready made. It comes from your actions.
This got me to thinking. Both of these people have the right idea but have both left out the one main component: GOD. Without God as the center of ones life there is no real happiness only fleeting moments that we consider happiness.
Let us look a little closer. “SOMETHING TO DO” and “IT COMES FROM YOUR ACTIONS” both seem basically the same thing. Truth is, our actions do have a lot to do with happiness.
The first and most basic thing that comes to my mind is, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Living by this “Golden Rule” as we call it can indeed give a person a feeling of satisfaction and happiness but one cannot even begin to do this unless they are led by the Holy Spirit.
Even if others we encounter in our daily lives don’t extend this kindness back toward us, it usually gives one a peace and happiness knowing that he/she is striving to do the right thing. There would be total happiness in the world if everyone lived this way, but we know non of us will be perfect until the Perfect One returns for us.
The next point worth reflecting on is, “SOMEONE TO LOVE.” Now this one hits the nail on the head, but once again it cannot be totally accomplished without God’s Spirit guiding us. GOD IS LOVE...period....nuff said... :)
Love, God’s kind of love, whether it be for a spouse, a child, a parent, or a friend does indeed brings happiness. If we strive to exhibit God’s kind of love to those around us, we can truly have happiness.
I don’t think it is only “having someone to love” that triggers the happiness but rather the actual act itself of loving and nourishing which causes the happiness. Loving others is just one way of showing our love toward God.
Our ultimate happiness, however, comes from loving and worshiping God. One can have a blissful feeling when giving God our time as well as our praise, worship, and money.
Then there is the other component listed, “SOMETHING TO HOPE FOR.” Without hope one cannot be happy...hope for a better tomorrow on earth but more importantly hope for life with Christ after we leave this earth. If our only hope is to be buried in the ground and rot after death we cannot truly have happiness because that thought/fear would always be in the back of our mind, especially as we get older. There is, on the other hand no truer happiness than having Hope in the Lord.
[The word “hope” or “hoped” is mentioned in 180 verses of the KJV Bible. The following is just a sample: 1. The Lord’s eyes are on those whose hope is in his unfailing love. 2. Blessed are those whose hope is in the Lord. 3. those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. 4. I am the LORD; those who hope in me will not be disappointed. 5. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 6. The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.]
I leave with you as my prayer for all of you,
Romans 15:13: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
