Friday

Friday, October 05, 2012

It's Friday! I like Friday, but I love Saturday! It's usually the only day I don't have a schedule to follow and can do what I want to do.

It's been a good week. I'm kind of starting over here. I have gotten out of the early-morning exercise routine over the last year. This week I got up early to exercise 4 times and it feels great! I'm taking small steps again.

Yesterday I caught part of the Dr. Oz show. When I turned it on, he was talking about the recent news announcement that there was no difference between organic and non organic (an announcement I completely ignored since I know organic at least tastes better and simply can't have the additives that are put in non organic varieties). He was quite upset about that announcement and then did his own study to find out how many pesticides were in some fruits and vegetables . I was aware of most of his findings except with potatoes. According to what he said on the show, potatoes are like chemical sponges. They are treated, the ground is treated and then the potatoes are treated again with chemicals after they are harvested. That was news to me. I grew some potatoes this year in my garden (I don't use pesticides or fungicides) and they taste so good! Since we don't eat that many potatoes, I think I'll try to find organic potatoes after these are gone. Our local farmers' market is till going strong with plenty of organic vegetables and fruits. I try to buy organic any way if I can afford it.

OK...I'm done babbling...have a great day everyone!

Argh! That stupid study and the way it has been promoted without the rest of the details. The way I understand it, the study showed no difference in nutritional value. Perhaps, perhaps not. There are many enzymes and antioxidants that are at least as important as vitamin content. However, it is not the vitamin content that drives my decision to grow my own food and to buy organic whenever there is the option to. It is the pesticides, fertilizers, genetic alterations, etc. that I do NOT want in my foods. In the past year, I have had three friends die of cancer. Food? Environment? We most likely won't know. But if we have the opportunity to reduce the pollutants that go into our bodies, it can only help.

The chemical companies want to stay in business and farming is big business for them. Not at my expense. I'll buy local and organic at every opportunity.

    Enjoy your weekend, my friend.
