Beautiful moment on my training along the canal today

Friday, October 05, 2012

I am in the process of training for my first 5K. I'm going to be going to Disney with my sister-in-law, brother and group of friends to celebrate her 40th. Her goal for this year was to run 4 Half Marathons, and finish at the Wine and Food Festival Half at Disney. I'm not at all a runner, and am so short, even a fast walk is tough for these little legs, but so far I seem to be doing alright.

I saw a beautiful sight today that I had to share with everyone. It's almost heartbreaking to think ahead, but love is love, you know.

I train on the Erie Canal trail near Rochester, NY. The parking area has a slight hill that you go up to get to the trail at this point. After my "run" I was cooling down with my reward (a nectarine from the farmers market) when I saw a very elderly man walking a very elderly dog in the parking lot. They were both very slow. He was the cutest little dog, but you could tell he was an old soul.

As they came to me, I got down to pet him and I asked how old he was. The gentleman told me he was 12. I looked at him and said "you've been coming here a long time, haven't you," to which the man replied, "everyday."

They got to the little hill and the dog couldn't handle the incline, so they turned around and slowly walked back to their car a few feet away and off they went.

As they left, I couldn't help but think of how much that pair had gone through as they both aged. I just thought it was so beautiful that even though the little guy couldn't make it to the trail anymore, which is gorgeous right now, his buddy still drove him to their spot and took him for his little walk. I just loved it.

Of course I got home and hugged the daylights out of my dog!!
