Bountiful Basket Saturday

Saturday, October 20, 2012

This is what I brought home today from Bountiful Baskets! Looks so pretty! The hubby was happy to see a couple pomegranates and dd was excited about the pineapple. I am now going to be forced to try kale as there were two bundles in the box. Any suggestions? The other new item for us were pear apples. I'd never heard of them!

I was at the gym prior to picking that box up and then I headed to the grocery store. Once home I started laundry, swept floors and then pulled up the tomato plants that looked so awful from the frost. Right now I'm procrastinating as I don't want to do school lesson plans or cut out doll clothes. I know....just do it!

Tomorrow will bring church, a free afternoon, Bible Quizzing at 4:30 and getting things ready for co-op on Monday.

I admit that our family doesn't like the kale. We give ours away at the pick up site now. We tried in a soup and as kale chips. Most people I know through BB make kale chips and rave about them though.

Pear apples are very interesting. I cut mine up and mix them with plain greek yogurt. They give my breakfast a crunch. They don't have a lot of flavor but have a crispy taste. Eat them while they are still firm. Unlike other pears that are better when a bit ripe, pear apples (or asian pears is the other name) are meant to be eaten when firm. They are also good chopped up on salad.

I have never used butternut squash so that is a new one for me this week. I don't know what I am going to do with it. Did you get grapes? They seem to be the best grapes ever!

    That does look good.
Kale is a wonderful veggie! I tear it into bite size pieces put a little oil and parmesan cheese and garlic salt. Spread it on a cookie sheet, pop it in the oven for a few minutes ..... and you got KALE CHIPS! (sorry I don't use a recipe for it just turn on the oven and watch to make sure they don't burn) they are so yummy! When making soup - right before your soup is done put your chopped kale in. And yes you can cook it like spinach ~ I have never tried it that way. I either bake it or put it in soup or other veggie mixes, but always right at the end of cooking so it's just wilted.

I tend to use kale as I'd normally use spinach

Love the basket! Let me know what you do with the kale. Everyone is touting it as the best veggie but I've never had it (yet). Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Beautiful colors. I've never cooked kale, DS steams hers and uses butter and a bit of seasoning. Kale is good in green juice drinks. Enjoy your basket. Glad you made it to the gym today. You are truly motivated. Good for you!

Heehee!! See Janet, I'm not the only one who didn't know what the baskets were. Pear Apples are YUM, Janet. When we lived in KS, we had 2 pear apple trees and they're just a sand pear (like sand cherry) with a round shape like an apple and a little on the tart side but scrumptious. I'll bet JKPONYGIRL Jennifer has some gr8 ideas for the kale. It's in the cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts family... and I've had it steamed a couple of times, with a bit of butter and salt and pepper. LOVE pineapple and pomegranates!!

Cutting out MORE doll clothes?!! You really ARE the best mommy a little girl could ever have!!
