Making changes

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Ok, so I have never been a blogger, but I thought it might be helpful on my journey to write out my thoughts and feelings. I am making changes! Yes, I am making changes not only to improve (even more) on what I eat, but also in my activity. I am currently attending a university and have never truly taken advantage of the awesome recreation center we have (at no additional cost to students). I know, I know, I have been going here for several years. Now growing up I was never into fitness so this is all new to me. I did sign up for a yoga class for credit this semester and I love it! Ok, so it kicks my but and I can't do everything that I need to, but I am sticking with it! I talked to my yoga instructor about a month ago. I wanted her advice on incorporating in other types of exercise and possibly weights. She is so awesome! Anyway, she said that she personally knew one of the fitness trainers there and she would talk to him about me. Anyway, I met him and he scheduled me for an assessment, I had to reschedule it, but I did finally get it done yesterday. Oh my goodness, that was interesting! Ok, I know I am extremely overweight, but to see it on paper where it shows body fat percentage and other figures is a real eyeopener. Anyway, I went through the assessment which included a step test (I couldn't last the 3 minutes), push-ups, sit-ups and a flexibility test. Oh my goodness! Anyway, money is an issue and even though a personal trainer is very inexpensive through there ($18/hr), after talking with my trainer (haha, never thought I say that) we decided I would train with him 1 hour per month, he would write up a plan for me, I will work on it during the month and then see him the next month. This is doable. He said I should do my plan 2x week. With my yoga 2x week that is definitely doable. I am on campus every day anyway! I also scheduled an appointment with the dietitian through the health center too. She is experienced working with diabetics (I'm type 2), but my appointment isn't until the last week of November. So here I am on my way to the new me!!

emoticon Thanks! I have some great support around me so hopefully they can help me get through those times you mentioned (I know they will be there!). My daughter is one of them, she is going to work out with me, she is also going to the same university and going to see about getting the assessment done. She does yoga and pilates every week. I would do the pilates class with her, but I am working during the time it is offered. Thanks for the encouragement!!

    Hi Cmeekers,

And welcome to the new you! I am so impressed with all you've done. Specifically, with your attitude to give this all a chance. It's a lot you've taken on all at once and it takes a while to adjust. It took me 6 months to a year. But that's just me. You may be different and you need to find your own unique ways that work.

The mind/body has a way of challenging your new pledge and changes, so watch for it and expect it. Change is hard and we'd (mind/body/subconscious/whatever) rather avoid the extra work. Who wouldn't?

What happens to me is that as soon as I try to make a change, "things" come up that prevent me from continuing. Like injury for one. I have to watch for over doing it. Just watching and being aware helps counter it when it shows up. Having unavoidable pledge at work is another. Getting sick is a third--it's a big one for me.

You are doing so well. Congratulations! emoticon
