Mamma ate organic

Thursday, January 03, 2013

Before it was popular, my 90 year old mother ate organic foods. Born in 1922, she grew up on a farm, and they never used pesticides. The meat she ate was fed organic grain, and the eggs she ate were free range organic. That was the standard for farms in the 20’s and 30’s. It took decades to destroy that base of healthy eating. She was diagnosed with diabetes at 89.

At almost 91, Glenna Gray is going strong, and her memory is clear. She walks every day, and still drives. She makes her own cards, and sends them to everyone in her family and in the church. She doesn’t just know these people by name, snow knows them by heart.

I helped my mom make a quilt for the great-grandchild due in July. She is still excited about life, love and the future. Health is the gift that keeps on giving. Passing on a legacy of good health choices is something that we can all do.

What a wonderful tribute to your Mom! My grandparents, and parents, farmed for a living and raised much of their meat and produce. Much of what they didn't raise, they bought from other local folks who also farmed and gardened.

this is a great comment on the strength!
I chose to go organic in May and it took me a lot of research and a lot of farm visits in the 45 mile radius before I found 2 farms where I liked their organic practices and the way they treated their animals and the way they grew their produce.
I now make a trip to these farms every month, they let me know when there will be fresh meat and produce, as well as dairy products like milk, yogurt, eggs, etc.
I call in my order, ordering just the amount I will be needing. SO the expense is much smaller than I would spend in a grocery store with prepackaged foods that aren't fresh and I don't know what has actually happened to the food in it's way to the store.
I find I am able to eat less as the food are nutrient rich and require less to feel satisfied.

Thank you for sharing your mother's story! It's great motivation for me to continue this practice- it may take a bit more time, but it is so very worth every minute I spend. PLUS it makes me plan my menus for weeks at a time.

Wonderful story. My grandmother was born on a farm in 1879. They raised wheat and dairy cows, plus the garden, pesticide free. The two of us visited her brother in 1948 when I was four. He was still farming the same way. Went out to the fields every day to taste the wheat to see if it was ready to harvest.

You're right. Technology has destroy what once was a way of life. Things are too easy now. Instant gratification has replaced a healthy lifestyle. Say hello to your mother for me!!
