Day 500: The Morning Quickie

Friday, March 29, 2013

We talk in terms of NSVs - non-scale victories, achievements such as dropping a dress size or jogging our first half-marathon.

I believe we don't allow ourselves to celebrate enough of these mini-achievements.

Why mini? If the biggies are life-changing (fast becoming an over-used term) events such as graduation, marriage, parenthood, then these others are more properly "mini-achievements," belonging in a second tier.

Don't make the mistake of viewing the glass as half-empty. Don't focus on "mini," and thereby disparage the significance of what's been accomplished. Focus on "achievement," and use the opportunity to enhance your self-esteem and to feel good about reaching this step.

I hear you: what's brought this on?

I was going to toss off a brief line or two and a pretty picture, then go about my day. Checking to see I'd enumerated correctly, I typed in "Day 500." And that's what set the ball rolling.

I have not blogged every day for the five-plus years I've been on Spark; this year I set out with a resolution to blog daily, however briefly - and have long since missed the mark once or twice.

"Day 500" doesn't mean "500 days of continuous blogs." It signifies "This is the 500th blog" - in itself inaccurate, as some days have seen two, or even three, blogs.

But this morning as I sit here with my coffee, contemplating the perennial To-Do list, I'm thinking - Yah. NSV indeed. I like it. It's a mini-achievement that makes me smile.

Start focusing on those NSVs, peeps, even the ones that have nothing to do with diet or fitness or weightloss. You are more remarkable than you allow yourself to feel. You aren't arrogant or conceited when you affirm your ability to succeed.

Share these mini-achievements. It will give us the chance to acknowledge them and to congratulate you, to reinforce your sense of satisfaction in a job well done. It boosts our confidence that we too can reach goals.

Most of all, it's such a good feeling when we can cheer someone. Now there's a genuine win-win situation all around.

...um, and folks? If I'm off-track here, I know I can rely on you all to set me straight, lol... Have a good'un, Sparklers - carpe diem!
