Handling the Phoenix Heat

Sunday, June 16, 2013

With temperatures starting in the low to mid 80s, many Phoenicians give up outdoor exercise beginning sometime in June and do not resume until October. Me, I can handle the early morning runs until the temps get into the low 90s, then I resort to only walking short distances to keep the hounds happy.

Some people I know have already sworn off exercising outdoors, even early in the day, saying mid 80s is too hot for them. I wondered why we were so different until I saw this graphic of the solar system making it's way through the facebook universe:

Since I was born in Yuma, apparently, Phoenix seems temperate to me instead of hotter than H-E-double toothpicks.

Still, I'll be slowing it down soon and getting those morning walks in around 4:30 a.m. or not at all. Thankfully, I do have a free gym membership at the office complex where I work, so I can hit the treadmill in air-conditioned comfort when it gets too darn ugly here in the land of hot, sunny days.

Haha -- this is too funny. I moved out of Phoenix at the end of last year -- but my family still lives there. It's great when they call to tell me it's 108 out, that I'm not having that crazy summer heat anymore!

Is your photo of "mountain pose" from the Phoenix preserve? I used to live right off it, and go hike there everyday -- haven't been able to do as much hiking here, but I'm hoping to get back to making it a regular habit. :-)

I loved the map. I admire you for continuing to exercise and getting up earlier and earlier to get a walk in. I am glad you have a gym you can use. Life in Arizona is not easy in the summer. I grew up in Hawaii but it was only moderate heat, I am now in WA where we can have 100 degree days.

Fun graphic! I can hardly handle the heat, and go golfing around 6:30 am or after 5pm. I am a moutain girl who loves snow and cold weather...

    Keep cool and well-hydrated!

Cute graphic! Maybe tolerance does depend on what we get used to early in life. I'm like Goldilocks. I don't want it to be too hot or too cold. 40-70 is just perfect.

Loved the graphic! I'm the same about the heat. I can still handle walking early in the morning, but that's about it, and that will soon be over, I'm afraid. I guess after 25 years of living in Phoenix, I've adjusted. On the other hand, my friend in northern Illinois was mentioning that it was in the 80s and finally warm enough to be in the pool. I don't think so! I generally think it's cold in our pool until we hit the 100s! :)

I love the graphic! I don't do heat or sun, or high humidity for that matter (difficult when you live in the southeast). Don't you just love when people say it's a dry heat? I think anything over 85 degrees is hot and your body needs to stay hydrated and cool down and any temperature over 95 degrees is just hot and the number ceases to matter.

You can probably hear me whining from where you are about the weather. emoticon Yuma and Death Valley... the only 2 places I know of in the US hotter than here. I've been here 28 years and only recently did I finally quit crying in the spring, dreading the heat around the corner.

I almost got up the nerve to head into town yesterday to have Chakra for lunch, in which case I would have asked you if you were available to join me. Moments after the thought crossed my mind my son called me and asked me if I could meet him for lunch.

I don't know how much advance warning you need, but I tend to be spontaneous about things like lunch because the weather is so unpredictable. If there's a cloud and a breeze I'm the first one out the door to admire it. And I'm heading into town to take care of all the errands that got put off in anticipation of that cloud!

    Lol. Nice picture :)

I'm jealous that you can handle such beautiful weather and sun. These past few days I've been struggling just with low 80s... I'm used to Canadian weather I guess.

LOVE, the graphic. I was born in Maine and by 6 AM in August I was crawling back inside our Phoenix home unable to breathe. Love the area but not in the summer!
