When You Blow Thru a Goal, Change it!

Sunday, June 30, 2013

Several months ago, I set a goal of accomplishing 1,200 minutes of exercise each month. That equates to 20 hours, an average of 5 hours exercise per week. It seems a lot for a woman who works full time, yet still doable.

In May, when I vacationed in Washington, DC, and Shenandoah National Park, VA, I did a lot more hiking and walking than "normal." As a result, I totally blew through my 1,200 minutes goal, accomplishing 1,501 exercise minutes for May. And I blogged about it, of course, in my blog titled "Motivated by Spark Trophies?" (see

One of my friends, Carol (TCHNCRAFT), challenged me to shoot for 1,502 in June so that I could beat my record. I accepted her challenge. (Thanks, Carol!)

To get there, I've added more running to my weekly plan and have been meeting a local friend one weekday for an early morning hike. As a co-leader for Spark Phoenix, I've also been more involved in setting meet-ups for our local Sparkers to work out. One "failed" mall walk, trying to beat the heat. (We went too early, and ended up having to walk around the outside of the mall! Of course, that required a blog, titled "Mall Walk Disaster," see
.) Fortunately, I found out the opening time and we went again, accomplishing an INDOOR 5k walk. And I'm happy we did, because I met another new local Sparker, Christine, who loves to hike.

This morning, Christine and I met up for a 5:45 a.m. hike, intending to go for an hour. Instead, we were both feeling great, so went a little over 1.5 hours.

Total exercise minutes for June... I blew through my goal of 1,502, and accomplished an astounding 1,627 minutes. Fellow Sparkers, that is over 27 hours of exercise!

Clearly, my monthly goal should no longer be 1,200 minutes. Also, realizing that we are now well into the worst season in Phoenix, I'm not going crazy and making it 1,700! The new goal is reasonable: 1,500 minutes per month. Accomplishing that goal when the low temp of the day at 5:30 a.m. is 90+ degrees and the highs are over 110 will prove challenging!

If it is too hot to run outdoors, I will run on the treadmill at the gym. If it is too hot to hike, I will jump on my mini trampoline. One way or the other, the 1,500 minutes will be accomplished in July. I'm counting on you, my SparkFriends, to keep me accountable!

Good for you, what an accomplishment, with working still too! Last year I went to the public pool on Cactus and "walked" up and down the lanes. It's good exercise and cool in our sizzling heat. I did some laps in hotel pools, not a lot of exercise but every bit of moving helps!

    Way to go! You Rock!

Could you talk to the mall owners and see if you can set up times for them to open the doors early for mall walkers? Some of the malls here open early for that reason, before the stores are opening, so that all you crazy walkers don't interfere with the shoppers. Just a thought.

That's fantastic! What an accomplishment, especially with your busy work schedule! There's always a minute or two to be stolen away for some positive movement, the trick is finding them and hopefully putting them together in a string so we can enjoy the movement a little more and even include others. You did it! I'd say you definitely deserve an award or trophy for that accomplishment!
I am looking forward to October when the mornings are bearable (for me) and joining in on some of the hikes.
    Have a fantastic day!!!

Isn't it amazing how much practicing healthy living (such as exercising) can increase so quickly? Nice work! That's a great amount of exercise and it sounds like you're having a lot of fun with it and getting some social time in, too! Way to strive for more while still setting realistic expectations for yourself! =)

emoticon to reaching and breaking through 1500 fitness minutes in June!
And emoticon to finding smart ways to exercise in the middle of summer heat in Phoenix! I imagine those early morning hikes are beautiful and fun.

I find that the more I exercise, the more energy I have and the better I feel - within reasonable minutes, of course ; )
