Is That Even Food?

Tuesday, July 02, 2013

My family and I have been trying to eliminate processed foods from our diet. It started because recently I noticed that my oldest daughter is much more slender than the rest of our household. Hmmm, she eats almost all the same food as the rest of us, except for one deviation. She avoids artificial foods like the plague! Well, heck, works for me! So now, I make my almost all my own food from scratch...even burger buns! I will tell you that you will most certainly be satisfied with less, if it is REAL food.
This afternoon, after my workout, I dropped by the grocery store for veggies for dinner and something for my lunch. I saw these yummy looking chicken wraps and thought that sounded good...until I read the ingredients. It took me longer to read than it would've taken me to EAT! Wouldn't you think the list would be:
Chicken, Lettuce, Tortilla, Hot Sauce?
Nope! It was a list of chemicals and dyes and fillers, all for $7.00! I did what my daughter would have done....shook my head and put it back. I bought high fiber tortillas, Roasted chicken breast, (preservative/nitrate free), cheese and lettuce...for a lot less than 7 dollars and there are lunches yet to be made!
I'm full, happy and healthy....and it was real Food!

You are so right. I get disgusted when I read labels, even of things that you would think wouldn't have additives. I only wish making everything from scratch were as quick as convenience foods. When I am tired, I just don't feel like taking the time to make real food dinners. :-(

    Wow, what a revelation!
I remember seeing Michael Pollan interviewed and he said we shouldn't eat anything for sale at a gas station. Funny, but wise!

I'm more conscious of what I'm eating / buying now, especially since my son became a vegetarian months ago. Of course, I have my husband (who is flexible) and 2 other adult children (non-vegetarians and one picky about his food) at home. It's not easy. It takes me longer to shop now (reading labels) and checking out if the ingredient has GMOs.

I like to listen to Dr. Fuhrman and other inspirational stories and videos (like Bunnykicks' 'Trip to Maui..."). I have a lot of work to do in changing my eating / exercise habits.

Reading the ingredient lists on processed foods is eye opening and rather tragic! Even on things that appear "fresh baked" (like slabs of grocery store carrot cake or what have you)... sometimes I just look on in wonder. Foods that LOOK familiar, created out of "ingredients" i would never have in my cupboard - what is this sorcery? Where is butter, sugar, egg, flour, milk? Why instead is it all about "hydrolyzed soy protein" and "dried egg solids" and "modified milk ingredients" and "fructose" and "hydrated palm glycerides"?!!! Sometimes I'm in awe that the resulting product actually looks like food... but I sure do question whether it is.

Good to see you eating whole foods. It's amazing on what we put in our mouths without realizing it. We still eat some processed foods but with dd's allergies we make most of it ourselves. Good for you. Let us know if this helps you lose weight more. emoticon emoticon

You know what ingredient list always shocked me ? crutons. Have you ever read the ingredient list for crutons ? it's long. very long. seriously how do they get so many ingredients into a half inch cube long ! I haven't bought crutons in ages.

Breyer's ice cream said it best, if you can't pronounce the ingredient, why are you eating it ?
