Yesterday was my appt with my Back dr up in Springdale AR. The trip going up was so nerve wracking I had about made myself sick by the time we got there but I was determined to stick to my guns on WHEN I would be willing to have this surgery. So the appt went GREAT for someone who is looking down the double barrel of a loaded back surgery gun............
I did ask him right off about having the pain stimulator installed instead of the back surgery and he said that is like putting the horse after the wagon. The back surgeries have to take place with the problems in my back and because it is going to be 2 major back surgeries I will be upping the dosage of my pain medications (you all know how this bugs me) but...................he said that after 3 months if the pain had not gotten any better we could apply for the surgery to implant the pain stimulator to see if it helped. So it is not off the table as of yet.
I DO HAVE MY OFFICIAL BACK SURGERY TIMES NOW. BACK SURGERY 1 WILL TAKE PLACE ON JANUARY 8th AT 5AM. For this surgery the DR's (back dr and another surgeon who will move my vital organs around so DR. B can get to my spine) will make in incision about 4 inches to the right of my belly button and then start at the bottom of my spine and separate the bottom 2 vertebra and put a disk between them that has been filled with bone marrow from my hip, he will then take off any herniations of that disk and the one above it. He will then turn me on my left side and make another incision below my rib cage and start to work on the next vertebra which he will separate and put another disk in, he will then make another incision further up closer to under my arm pit and he will work on getting any herniations off every disk. I will then be closed back up (this surgery will take about 4 hours) and sent to recovery and then to a private room and with no complications I will get to go home the next day.
NEXT COMES THE 2ND BACK SURGERY WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE 14TH OF JANUARY AT 5 AM.
For this surgery it will begin on my right side and the DR will go back in the 2 incisions and place the disk between the 3rd, 4th and 5th vertebra and make sure there are no bone spurs or any bone fragments that were left behind from either surgery. I will then be placed on my stomach and the incisions on my back will be about 4" long on either side of my lower spine. Once the DR is inside he will then take 2 6" rods and 6-8 screws and place them on either side of my back bone to give it the support it needs to heal and let the bones re-grow to the new disk that have been implanted. This titanium hardware will remain in my back forever (unless there is some major emergency that makes it have to come out, my Dr does 200 of these surgeries a year and has for 30 years and he said in all that time only ONE person has ever had to have the hardware removed). Once he has everything in place in my back just like he wants he will close me up and I will be sent to recovery (this 2nd surgery can take anywhere from 4-6 hours) and then to a private room where I will remain for 6-8 days baring no complications.
So there you have it ladies, you now know just as much about the surgeries as I do, when they will take place, how long they might take and how much recovery time I might be going through.
Here is where I will be at.
