We need to act silly--maybe!

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

On this wintery cold windy day, memories keep me going----
like---this old school house from the Port Perry, Ontario, area--sorta like the one I attended in London--

Remember these old desks?----
My Mom used to be a teacher at our school-sometimes she even taught the class I was in----I was proud to be her daughter---I felt special!-
One thing that happened in that school---We had "air raid" practice---
Do any of you remember that?
We had to get under the desk and cover our heads when the teacher flashed the lights------
...much like the children in this picture-(If you look closely, they are under the desks)
These practices gave me nightmares at home----any flash of light, I thought a plane from Russia was coming over to bomb us!
Funny how we were raised compared to the children to-day----
We ran all over--never dreamt that anyone could kidnap us---
Our 2 wheel bikes were our best friends---
We never gained weight--We never stopped long enough---played "'Hide 'n Seek"---"Kick the can"--build forts----Exercise was fun---
To-day the "Dreadmill" replaces all that--
Life is good to-day-----but--the "Quarter Pounder with Cheese" has replaced Orange Crush---Remember orange crush?-Does anyone drink that now?--
Good morning Sparkly People-Time to get moving--
Maybe I will get to play in the snow to-day! Maybe we need to act a bit silly to-day-!! Lord Love A Duck!

My, does that look like my country schoolhouse! I remember the air raids drills but since we were miles from anywhere, it was hard to imagine anyone coming after us dirt-farm kids LOL!

Oh those desks bring it all back. I had those in kindergarten. My Mom went to a one room school house in Chatham Ontario.

Silly is essential: I try, for example, to wear one silly thing every day. (Today: a rhinestone watermellen pin on my jacket).

And those pictures are just like the classrooms I remember too . . in Woodstock, ON.

Lynda, I remember ALL these things! Those were the good old days for sure...I actually wish we were back in those less hectic times...even with the air raid drills!

Thanks for the reminders...and I actually did have a DIET orange crush a couple years ago but like you say, we never needed "diet" anything that long ago...we MOVED so much...playing mostly!

emoticon for such great memories! emoticon

emoticon OK that's my silly look for today! I totally remember Orange Crush, Kick-the-Can, Hide-and-Seek, that silly magic 8 Ball, jumping rope, Hope Scotch, Dodge Ball AND hiding under the desk during the air raid practice.

Now thinking back on it, what the heck good would that have done for a nuclear attack. NOTHING. But we were obedient and covered our heads under the desks.

We lived and grew up in good times!!!

HUGS and here's to a silly Wednesday.

Yes, I remember all those things, too! My goodness, long time ago...

On the subject of fun, I'm sitting here watching two calves chasing each other back and forth in the field, just having a ball. How wonderful. Seems like cows get all their fun in when they're young, and then get deadly serious for the rest of their lives... We have to be careful that's not US. As for us acting silly today, the ONLY drawback I can think of is that our age our children might have us committed! LOL!

Have a super day today, Lynda. And thank you for the smiles and the memories.

OMG what freedom we had as kids!! Out all day only home to eat a quick lunch. We had woods behind our house and we used to play Army (I only had brothers and their friends for playmates until my best friend moved in down the road) and Hide and Seek and so many other things. Impromptu ball games, the rope swing over the creek behind our house (I once fell in and was I ever in trouble) We had not a care in the world except to have fun!! Later when my kids were small I was lucky to move into a neighborhood where my neighbors also thought that kids should be out playing instead of sitting and watching TV all day. But it had changed because you had to warn them not to talk to strangers, not to go near cars if someone called to you and a whole lot of other warnings that we did not have as kids. Such a shame it has all changed. We don't have too many children in our neighborhood anymore and the few that are here you never see them playing outside. emoticon

And yes let's be silly today!! I have a similar picture dressed as a Gypsy for my daughter's school Halloween party (I was homeroom mom so felt the need to dress up) complete with crystal ball to tell fortunes (ok it was a magic 8 ball but it was still magic...it has the word in it's name!!!) The kids loved it although older daughter in fifth grade then was quite embarrassed (I popped into her classroom for a few minutes and never did that again) As you can see, silly is my middle name!!! My himself usually just rolls his eyes at me!!!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!! And thanks for making us all remember our very special childhoods!!

    Oh, yes! Let's be silly!

Oh, and I *do* remember "duck and cover drills". Especially during the Cuban missile crisis... living in the shadow of the US Strategic Air Command, as I did as a first grader! Totally agree with your commentary on how we were raised compared to the generation today.

Yes, I remember some of those things. We never had air raid drills though. We had earthquake drills. I lived in California when I was little. I never thought we would have those here, but now we do. Every year we have an earthquake drill in the Chicago area schools! Get outside and have some fun, but dress warm! emoticon
