We have a pair of nesting Sand Hill Cranes that come every year and lay their eggs. So far the eggs have never been fertile and the Mother Crane sits on the eggs for months longer than she normally would. A cranes eggs usually hatch within 30 days. We always felt so bad for them. Two days ago their two eggs hatched! It was thrilling to see the babies. We live on a private lake, the nest has always been built on a very small island within the lake. Yesterday we saw the babies tottering around the island and were afraid they would fall into the lake. Next thing I knew they were swimming, I didn't know they could. The Mother stayed right with them, never let them get away from her. They spent the day up in the yard just wandering around pecking for bugs. Then by evening they had made it back to their nest the the night. It's been fun watching them.
