The Cranes

Friday, February 28, 2014

We have a pair of nesting Sand Hill Cranes that come every year and lay their eggs. So far the eggs have never been fertile and the Mother Crane sits on the eggs for months longer than she normally would. A cranes eggs usually hatch within 30 days. We always felt so bad for them. Two days ago their two eggs hatched! It was thrilling to see the babies. We live on a private lake, the nest has always been built on a very small island within the lake. Yesterday we saw the babies tottering around the island and were afraid they would fall into the lake. Next thing I knew they were swimming, I didn't know they could. The Mother stayed right with them, never let them get away from her. They spent the day up in the yard just wandering around pecking for bugs. Then by evening they had made it back to their nest the the night. It's been fun watching them.

Oh how sweet. Last year when we first moved to this house, we have tow ceramic open mouth fish. A momma bird decided to nest in one of them. Right on our back porch where we sit and hang out. She could care less. She built and built, then we saw the tiny eggs. Finally these little tiny baby birds, which she fed and cleaned endlessly. We were so sad when those very load babies flew the coop, or should I say fish. I call it the bird condo. safe, clean and warm. It was fabulous. and I am sad that it hasn't happened again.
    Thanks for sharing

I think that is so cool!

Since I have been doing picture of the day, it makes me go out and look for different things. Stop and appreciate stuff you don't normally see. And feel good really good. It does give you a nice sense of peace.

I hope you got some pictures of them.

I still need to get over to the park to see if the owl had any babies this year.
