Weekend Bible Study

Sunday, March 16, 2014

Today's study will take us on a journey of learning how to Practice the Presence of God through “Abiding”.

John 15:5A I am the Vine, you are the branches.

In order for a branch to live it needs to stay connected to the vine. The vine gives the branches nourishment to maintain its life. Once the branch is cut off its life will be cut short because it has lost it’s lifeline of sustenance. A branch that is not connected to the vine will surely die.

Jesus is our lifeline, it is He who provides for us His branches. We are the branches who are nourished by Jesus. Providing we stay connected to the Vine we will remain nourished and healthy. If we turn away from Jesus, the Vine, our source of life, we will surely die.

David learned what it meant to stay connected to his source of life. We too can learn the same lessons by Abiding & staying connected to the Vine. We can develop a relationship that will be close to God and one that will produce fruit.

How can we develop that kind of relationship with God? First I must desire friendship with God more than anything else. Remember we are as close to God as we really chose to be. It is our choice. Nothing happens by accident, we need to make a conscious effort to develop a friendship with God. The more I become close to God the more I will care about the things that matter to God. The closer I draw to God the more He draws closer to me.

Developing a relationship takes Time, Energy and Desire. You need the desire to do something before the ball will start rolling.

Desire produces change. As I stay connected to the Vine I will begin to change. I will begin to grow in the things of God which will draw me closer to Jesus.

Abiding is staying connected. Jesus is the Vine and He desires for His branches to stay connected to Him.

The bottom line is it is up to me to develop a friendship with God. The question to ask myself is: Am I going to invite God to be near to me and be my Friend? Will I be a vessel that will be known as a Friend of God? Will I be someone who will draw close to God and be someone who will stay connected to the Vine?

James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Remember I will be as close to God as I really chose to be.

Closing Thoughts

We have just concluded our study of what it means to Practice the Presence of God through abiding. Abiding is staying connected. Staying connected to Jesus above all else. My desire and hopefully yours is that we will desire a relationship that would lead to a lasting friendship with God.

Remember, I will become a friend of God as I draw closer to Him and allow God to draw closer to me. I will stay connected to the Vine providing I make that conscious effort to stay connected.

My desire is for us to draw closer to God as a Church and allow God to become our “Friend”. Let us be a people who will spend time reading and studying scripture and spending time in prayer. Let us be vessels that are “Abiding in Christ”, staying connected to the Vine.

Rick Warren quoted from “The Purpose Driven Life”: There is nothing, absolutely nothing, more important, than developing a friendship with God. It is a relationship that will last forever.
