Where I've been & Where I'm going

Hi everyone,

I know it's been a while and I wanted to fill you in on what's been happening in my world. First of all, from July 2013 to the end of January this year, my husband had been going though medical treatment for a serious illness. Thank God the treatment was successful! Well, shortly after that, we found out that he has Type 2 Diabetes and 2 weeks later he was on Insulin.

I don't want any sympathy about this, it's life and you have to deal with it. But with these emotional ups and downs it's was hard for me to keep up with what I was doing on SparkPeople, so I needed to take a break from it.

I have gained some weight (big surprise!) but I have also begun losing some of that weight. I decided to get off my butt and quit feeling as if my life was out of control. I found out the health insurance plan I have also includes weight management and I made an appointment with a doctor in early June. As a result since I weighed in at the doctor's office I have officially lost a little over 13 pounds. I am on a 1100 - 1300 calorie a day diet and my breakfast & lunches include protein shakes & bars. It's called a Modified Very Low Calorie Diet. I am of course under a doctor's supervision for this. I am attending weekly weight management classes and am seeing a dietitian as well.

So here's my daily meal plan:

Breakfast:
200 Calorie Protein Shake

Mid morning snack:
1 piece of fresh fruit (Banana, pear, apple, etc.)

Lunch:
100 Calorie Protein Shake
160 Calorie Protein Bar

Mid afternoon snack:
Veggie (carrot sticks, bell pepper, etc.)

Dinner:
Normal meal with protein, carbs, fat, veggies, etc.

Needless to say, because of my husband's dietary restrictions, I have really cut out a lot of carbs in my diet. I never really thought I could do this because I LOVE carbs. Give me a baked potato, or pasta any day! It's amazing what you can do when you really want to isn't it?

Something else I have noticed because of the plan I am following now is that it's amazing what things I see and 'want' when it never bothered me before. That doesn't mean I am going to buy them though. I just have to get my mind trained as to what is right for me.

Oh, and I made the commitment to myself that I would start working out at the gym. I have my bag packed and plan to start tomorrow. That should really kick butt on my weight loss.

So, you may not see as many blogs from me as you did in the past, but I will give you updates as I progress.

    So glad to have you "back among us" once again! Diabetes, properly managed, sure can turn your life upside down. I am so thankful that I don't have it, as I am really not sure I could adhere to all the limitations it imposes. BUT, you do what you have to do, and it sounds like you are a by product beneficiary of the changes your husband needs to make. So there is a silver lining to every cloud! I thought about you a few weeks ago when I was at the Albuquerque Arts and Crafts Festival. I bought a pair of glass earrings and saw many pieces similar to what I have seen you post here on SP. Such pretty designs and color combinations. Glad you are back!

    Life happens Genie and we have to deal with it. My dh has afib and has to be careful about meds and others things. We are learning as we go and doing pretty good most of the time but when our partner is sick, it can really throw a curve in our life and make us changes things big-time. Take one day at a time and prayers for both of you. You can handle the exercise. ((HUGS))

    Genie, you've had lots going on and have your priorities right as they need to be!

    Stress is not conducive to weight loss OR maintenance. Hope you are finding ways to "get your bliss on".

    Hope your DH stays faithful to his nutrition and exercise regime. Makes a world of difference in type 2 control (I have it too).

    Happy you are back. I am sorry to hear about hubby's illnesses but happy to know he is managing them.

    You appear to have a good plan for you. Keep us updated as you go along.

    BTW, what kind of protein bars and shakes are you using? I am trying a similar thing, in cutting down the carbs and upping my protein.
