Day 560: An Early Blog

Thursday, January 08, 2015

Bits 'n' pieces:

I don't remember when I first came across "About.com." If you're not familiar with it, a description might be "an anthology of topics and subjects," everything from how-to's to movie reviews to recipes. Some of the articles are quite in-depth; some generate weekly newsletters. I tend to browse it the same way I do eHow or Wikipedia. (I need to get out more, lol.)

At any rate, this morning I received the current About.com 'Health' newsletter. It's headlined "Weight loss is simple, but not easy." I hadn't thought of it in just so many words, but - yah. The lightbulb went on. I can always use more lightbulb moments.

* * *

I struggle with pithiness. You may have noticed (ahem) I churn out words at the rate of 100 mph. This means I struggle with status updates. Sure, if I update every five minutes ("Kasey is eating lunch" "Kasey is checking the mail" "Kasey will be back in a few") I can keep them short (!) and sort-of informative. But otherwise... I'm at a loss.

This is all leading up to my yesterday's status update, "...whatta day." Some of my fellow Sparklers have asked if it was good? bad? indifferent?

Yesterday was (as so many days are, as sometimes I think Life is) like a diluted opening to Tale of Two Cities. You know, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"? Yesterday wasn't polar opposites to that extent, but it was up, down, over, under - a roller coaster of a day but for no specific reason.

Myself, now, I have a real appreciation for quiet days. I don't have to go anywhere, do anything special, have any excitement. Days without appointments (doctor, dentist, tax person) are good ones. Days with running around and myriads of phone calls are not, because they aren't quiet. Quiet enough, at any rate.

Yesterday we were in most of the morning: I tend to do housework and computer work in the mornings. We knew the washer repairman* was supposed to be in to install a new part on the machine. We also had a package to pick up at the post office. Yesterday was also Day 2 at the gym, which was a Don't-Miss in our calendar.

*Ah, the joys of non-home ownership! We say to the landlord "Washer needs repair," and while the repair is no faster, at the end - no bill. Joy indeed.

By 1 the repairman had not shown up. Two of the business calls (one to a network helpdesk, one to the local GP) had not been returned. And we needed to get to the local PO as they don't have parcel pickup after 3.

Call the repair office ("We can make sure he comes after 3, but remember, he has to finish by 4:30")... call the helpdesk ("Someone will return your call shortly" - hah)... head out to the PO and the gym, in that order.

Of course, when we get back, there are three messages on the phone, a card in the mailbox ("We tried to deliver a parcel, but you were out! Stop by the post office before 3 tomorrow" - different parcel), and the repairman is on the doorstep.

One out of three ain't bad.

Today will be much the same. Chasing our tails, accomplishing one or two out of a shortlist of tasks and errands and another round of phone-tag. Seems to me an awful lot of wasted effort goes into the 21st-century busy-ness of Life. Is it just me?

At any rate, I was more than ready to hit the hay last night, and - whatta day!

I'm always looking for websites that include us boomers - there seems a real dearth of them, which surprises me as many (most?) of us have taken to computers like ducks to water. We're no less a market than we were as we surged through the '60s and '70s (and beyond), are we?

A while back I joined a website called "Growing Bolder." Among other things the title appealed to me. It appears to be part of a broadcasting group, so perhaps there's a television show; if so, I haven't seen it, but they have newsletters and an eZine.

They had some inspirational posters for the New Year. One of my favorites:

Mmm hmm. I'll take my inspiration where I can find it.

'ave a good 'un, Sparklers - carpe diem!

I for one love reading your blogs! You have quite a way of putting things that hits home with me! i too cherish the days of quiet which I have quite a few of now that my life does not revolve around my daughter and she is grown and has a family of her own to fuss over! However, I never take my peaceful days for granted!

"Weight loss is simple, but not easy." --- This is a point stressed by Siebold in his Mental Toughness program at his FatLoser site that first came to my attention in a WATERMELLEN Blog. She is currently blogging about revisiting his site for a refresher.

The joys of NON-ho-moaner-ship are becoming more and more appealing to moi. Hitch in our part of the world is that the costs are astronomical. At our family Christmas gathering I listened to stories from the younger generation of rents being doubled and tripled as leases run out. Scarey thought.

    Have a Sparkly day!

It's the Hurry up and Wait syndrone---which is annoying as crap! Glad you did not miss the repair man---now the ultimate question, Did he get it fixed? Hope today is not as trying and you get those quiet moments more often--neat poster!
