Being 100% Present

Friday, April 03, 2015

I make a point of watching the national news broadcasts whenever I can. Although I know to expect stories of events in our country and around the world that horrify and sadden me, I also count on most of those stories having a positive side, the proverbial ‘saving grace.’ Sometimes it is one or more individuals overcoming the most unbelievable odds in order to survive and thrive. Other times it is individuals taking action on behalf of their neighbors. My emotions as I watch these stories move from sadness (and sometimes real heartache) for the victims of extreme challenges to a spark of pleasure from seeing that the best qualities of our human race have come to the fore and made a positive difference.

Tonight’s news about the devastating effects of extreme weather reminded me how very fortunate those of us who live in the United States are because we know that no matter what disaster happens where we live, there will be those individuals and organizations who will step forward to assist and, in every case possible, rescue us. Why am I blogging about this on SparkPeople? What does it have to do with my journey to better health?

I want to be one of those people who steps forward to assist my neighbors who are affected by extreme challenges. In order to be physically and mentally ready and able to be there for my family, my friends and my neighbors in times of big and small challenges, I must be healthy both physically and mentally. I must have assisted and “rescued” myself from the “sluggish” way I have been living my life for the past few years. Then and only then can I be 100% present in my own and my loved ones’ lives.

I’m looking forward to each day as more and more of all those things that have been holding me down drops away.

I really like how you watch the news, how you look for the survivors, how you look for the human spirit. It's really a great positive spin on some devastating life truths. Thanks for that perspective, that has everything to do with Sparkpeople!
