Horrified and Saddened About...

Wednesday, April 08, 2015

the shooting death of an unarmed and fleeing man by a police officer in South Carolina. I wonder how many times this type of thing has to happen before it is made clear to everyone in law enforcement that citizens will not tolerate the shooting of an unarmed and fleeing person. No matter what crime a citizen is accused of committing, unless the person poses an active and imminent threat of death to the officer, there is no justifiable reason for the officer to shoot at the person.

Apparently, many think this is just one more example of white law enforcement using unnecessary force against a black citizen. This is a horrific incident whether that is the case or not, but it is even more horrifying if there is even a small component of racism to the motivation and actions of this officer.

I send my prayers and loving concern to the family of the man who was killed. My heart breaks for them. I send my prayers and loving concern to the citizens of North Charleston and South Carolina. I know they have a long road ahead when their communities will feel the negative effects of the world examining the motivations and actions of this one man.

My prayers and loving concern also go out to the family of the police officer. No matter what the outcome of the investigation may be, these family members will forever be negatively affected by the choices made by their loved one. My heart breaks for the officer's wife who I understand is 8 months pregnant. A time that undoubtedly was full of excitement and joy on the pending birth of their child has now turned into one which I imagine is full of worry and grief.

What a tragedy this situation is for all. Again, I am horrified and saddened.

I think you've pretty much said it all.

These types of things are either occurring more often than it the past or technology has become such that we know about each and every incident. Either way, lives are ruined and mistrust continues to grow between citizens and law enforcement. Not a good omen for the future.
