Volunteering on My Bucket List

Monday, April 13, 2015

I've received a lot of comments on my blogs creating my Bucket List. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions, enthusiasm for my choices and encouragement that I go for it. I found the simple exercise of creating a Bucket List to be energizing and satisfying. How much more so will the actual doing of those things be!

An important value that the exercise reinforced for me is giving to others or, in other words, volunteerism. When I reread my first blog of items for my Bucket List, I was struck by the fact that the items were all about me, where I want to go, what I want to do. I didn't like that because that isn't the way I want to live the rest of my life. If you read my second and third Bucket List blogs, you will see that opportunities to volunteer are there. I am just as excited about, if not more so, pursuing the volunteering items as I am about doing the most exotic of the other items.

So here's to Bucket Lists. I highly recommend you make one for yourself.

Teaching Tao Tai Chi is on my bucket list.. Everything we do for the Society is volunteer work...even the hour a day, four days a week that I act as a set leader in the beginning classes is volunteered time. Love helping people find their balance and a feeling of security on their feet!

emoticon I do volunteer, a couple of times a month.
Also, my neighbors are aging. (I'm 60) I have 3 neighbors, in their 80's & single, 2 still drive, 1 doesn't drive. I have keys to all their house, a list of their meds & phone numbers for their children. Only 1 has Life Alert, yet I am trying to convince the other 2, to get. They are in 2 story houses & 1 recently fell on the stairs.
We speak on the phone at least twice a week. I see them at least once a week. I plan outings with them. They love the outlet mall, but won't drive their & the parking is crazy. Every other month, we make a trip to the mall & out for lunch. Sometimes we'll plan a movie & dinner outing.
I love it! They appreciate it. I hope someone does the same for me 1 day. I plan to live to 104. Long Bucket List! emoticon

I retired from human services, helping people my whole career. For me, volunteering is the farthest thing from my mind. I'll be satisfied more just to take care of my wife and myself. Glenn

I like the point you made, that originally it was all about you, instead of giving back. How many of us would have that first response? I would like to volunteer after I retire.
