Scrapple - pork vs turkey

One of the things we deal with in our attempts to live a healthy lifestyle is the food traditions we grew up with. Sometimes its an issue because our family still eats that way and expects us to (or we think they expect that) and sometimes those foods are what really tastes good to us.

I grew up in Chester County, Pennsylvania. This is the land of mushrooms ( a good thing) and scrapple (a weird thing). What is scrapple? Basically, its made of all of the scraps left over after the best cuts of pork are used to make other things. We like to say its everything but the oink, though they do add a few other things (flour, corn starch, gelatin, onions, spices) . If you ever try it, its probably better not to know just what's in it before you taste it, because it tastes really good until you think too much about the contents. The flour, corn starch, and gelatin make it possible to form it into a block. You can do a variety of things with it, but we used to just slice it thin and pan fry it. My brother loves to tell about working at the local pork processing plant, for about 20 minutes. He didn't have a problem with killing the pig, though that is harder than you'd think. It was what he had to do next that was too much for him, and that's all I'm going to say about that...

One of my SparkFriends is from the same part of the country and we have had a lot of laughs about scrapple. The other day I was in the grocery store and ran across a package of turkey scrapple in the clearance bin, so I bought it. What's in turkey scrapple? Pretty much everything but the gobble, though I'm happy to say there are no gizzards. I'm not going to go into a long explanation of what a gizzard is, but I'm glad that they aren't there because there are little stones in gizzards. Not like kidney or gall stones, birds actually eat small stones or gravel to aid in their digestion and they end up in the gizzard. I wasn't going to explain the gizzard, was I? Can you tell that my mother grew up on a farm where they raised chickens?

My friend asked about the nutritional info on turkey scrapple (not the ingredients - she knows better!) and I thought it would be interesting to compare turkey scrapple to pork scrapple and this was a good place to do it. That and between my own challenges and my mother's, my blog posts have been pretty heavy for quite a while, so this is meant to be a lighter topic. The servings sized for both are 2 oz or 56 g

Pork scrapple -
calories 119, total fat 8g, sat fat 3g, cholesterol 27mg (9%), sodium 369mg (15%), total carbs 8g, no fiber, no sugars, protein 5g. Vit A 23%, Vit C 2%, Iron 6%

Turkey scrapple -
calories 80, total fat 4g, sat fat 1g, cholesterol 45mg (15%), sodium 230 mg (10%), total carbs 8g, no fiber, no sugars, protein 4g. Vit A 30%, iron 6%

This story, let alone the nutritional information, will probably not make any of you anxious to run out and try scrapple, especially since between the fat, cholesterol, and sodium its not something any of us should eat a lot of, but I hope that a few of you will find this amusing. But hey, its a great source of Vit A, right? emoticon

    I actually like scrapple a lot. Very tasty. I also choose not to think about the ingredients. Can you tell I grew up in Central PA?

    Well... we eat scrapple. And we're Virginians. And we love it - but I only cook it on Sunday and himself and I only get one slice a piece.

    And he hated the turkey scrapple so we eat Original Rappa Brand Scrapple! LOL
