At certain times I get very nostalgic about the past and what I remember as being so yummy and tasty I want to recreate it.

My Grams strawberry shortcake with home made sweet biscuits and heavy whipped cream, served with loads of fresh picked strawberries.

I picked the berries at Greens Bridge Gardens on Tuesday.

I wanted the sweet biscuits Gram used to make.
None of those shortcake cups from the grocery store. They fall apart, turn to mush as soon as berries are added.
The berry patch usually sells the ones I want, made by Grandma Jan a local baker. But the holiday had her running late, I didn't want to sit and wait.
I decided to make my own. Only wanted a couple.

Quick trip to pick up some heavy whip cream, and I'm ready for a trip down memory lane.

Now here's where you can visualize this dish of strawberry shortcake.

A deep desert dish.
Split the biscuit, lay bottom half in dish,
Cover with as many strawberries as you want,
Top the berries with the other part of biscuit .
Cover it with more berries,
Top the berries with a good dollop of whip cream.
Take a spoon, dip it into the dish, and taste the best ever strawberry shortcake.

Now I'm not much of a ice cream eater. I usually end up throwing it away.
But I do love Gelato.
Gelato and ice cream are not the same.

I saw this Coconut Gelato when at the store, decided I could work it into my meal plan.

With a little forethought you can have foods that don't fit into your daily meals.

I won't have Gelato and Strawberry Shortcake on the same day.
I'll balance out my meals and nutritional values with my other foods.

I choose what foods to indulge in.
What is important to me.

When at my craft show there was a local baker selling the tasty looking fruit filled fritters.
Most of the vendors were raving about how delicious they were.
I chose not to indulge.
I was planning the strawberry shortcake this week, so a huge fritter didn't fit into my food plan.
Give some through to what is important and what you can pass up.

I can watch what I eat. I can limit what I eat. But I won't give up all foods all the time.
I believe you have to balance it all out.
Deprive yourself from all the "forbidden foods" and you will eventually say to heck with it all and binge out on everything.
Then you will feel guilty and start all over.

Moderation,,,everything in moderation.

No fake, no fat free, sugar free, no substituted ingredient, just give me regular food in moderation and I will manage .

    Your grandma's shortcake sounds just like my mother's, except she did not like whipped cream and insisted I could only put milk on mine. I added the whipped cream when I got old enough to leave home and make my own! Your memories to go with the food are lovely and your ability to balance your eating budget so you can have the shortcake is admirable. Enjoy!

    emoticon Moderation in all things. It's a way of life, not a diet. I also do not use special foods as a reward. My reward is my improved health and that remains at the forefront on all my choices.

    Do we share a grandmother??! My grandmother made it the 'sweet biscuit' way too. Such fond memories. Thank you for the memories, Tisha.

    I love that you work everything into your food plan/meal plan. I cannot deprive myself either. If I do, it's all I think about - that one thing I have decided I just 'can't have.' Nonsense! We do have to learn to incorporate what we enjoy.

    I could just taste that Strawberry shortcake! It sounded delicious! I agree with you on the gelato too, I bought the pistachio and eat a 1/4 cup at a time. You have to keep on living life and enjoying the small pleasures even if you can't indulge like years ago! emoticon

    I recently overheard my daughter tell someone "My mom makes the BEST strawberry shortcake." and it reminded me it's been years since I did it. I also use the sweet biscuit approach and people who've never had the real deal are blown away.

    I so agree that moderation is the key!
    And treats, deserts and special occasions can be counted and worked into our planned eating! Feeling deprived is not the way to go!

    I love strawberries plain or with a little whipped cream. They are delicious dipped in dark chocolate too. I have never tasted gelato. It sounds good.
