Dog on My Doorstep!

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

I had a dog show up on my doorstep yesterday morning bright and early. He was whining outside our door so DH got up to investigate. Turns out he was severely injured.

We initially thought that he may have been hit by a vehicle passing by. We weren't really sure. I called our vet who informed us they couldn't take him because of liability. I couldn't afford to accrue a huge vet bill since I already have 2 dogs of my own....SO, I was in a really bad place...I wasn't sure what to do. I called around to some shelters to see if I could get the poor guy some help with no luck. Most were full, so they wouldn't take him or said they would euthanize him and I didn't feel like he was that severe. He could walk and would eat and drink. Needless to say, I had to go to work and so did my DH, so we decided to wait it out and see how he held up until this morning. I know it sounds crazy to pray for a dog, but I did. I felt SO bad for this poor guy.

I went on to work and it was a fill-in pharmacist for the day who actually fosters animals. She said she would call her vet and she would take him in temporarily until he could get adopted. She volunteers with a no-kill shelter that fosters animals out and was able to get him in this a.m. to her vet. I just had to drive him there this morning. It was about an hour away, but well worth it to get him the medical care he needed. It turns out, that he was not hit by a vehicle after all.

He. Had. Been. BURNED!! Let that sink in....someone took hot water, coffee, tea...some kind of boiling hot liquid and threw it at or on him and burned him!!!!! It angers me to think someone could be SO cruel! Why this guy decided to come to me, I will never know, but I am glad he did and I am glad I was able to find him help. He is going to get better with time. He NEVER once snapped, nipped, or bit at ANY of us while loading him, while they bathed him, or while they administered medication. He came back negative for intestinal worms and parasites and he did not have heartworms. He got all of his shots today as well. He received a very good bill of health considering what he had just been through. He is a very gentle dog and was VERY friendly to my children. The vet said he was around 10 months to 1 year of age.

Here is another picture of him:

He needs to be adopted though. If you know anyone in the Ridgeland/Briarwood area of Jackson, Mississippi who would like to take in the precious dog, please let me know. We need to find him a good loving home.

emoticon You are a spell-binding writer! It was like being punched from behind when you told us how the pup got his injuries. The cruelty of people... I found a beautiful young boxer wandering down our street, all his ribs sticking out and his fur dull and shedding. I'd seen him staked to a short chain in a neighbor's yard around the corner. Turns out that the family moved and left him staked in the yard. A miracle he was able to pull free. He was a beautiful animal. The man from the humane society said he would be adopted in no time to a good home and he was. (I called every day so I could come to get him if it came to that, despite our two cats.)

You are an angel for doing this. I've seen some rescue centers that have internet sites and people adopt from all over the country. I look at schipperke rescue sites and many (if not most) of the animals are not purebred. Your little guy looks like he could maybe pass for a basinje.

Please keep us informed and thank you for not turning away from an animal in need.

Wow. That is so sick. What kind of a monster would do that?
He is so lucky that he went to your door for help.
Thanks for taking care of him and getting him help. emoticon

Sarah, who has him at her home fostering him for now, is setting up the process for adoption through an agency now. I do not have the details yet, but as soon as I do, I will post them for everyone. Through text this morning, she said he was doing really well and that he is SO sweet. I am thankful for each and everyone of your support and prayers. Sam (which is what we are calling him for now) appreciates it too.

Thank you, Amanda, for seeing to this dog's care! There was a reason he came to your doorstep! I also prayed for this pup and will continue to do so. May he continue to recover and find a forever home soon!

I actually asked my husband if we could drive down to MS(from DC Metro Area) to get the dog, and I was shocked that the answer wasn't no. But it wasn't yes, either. He said there were too many variables to do it in one weekend. But he was appalled and upset, too.

Keep us updated on his adoption, yeah?

ETA: Is there a link to the rescue's website? I bet at least a few of us would be ready and willing to donate toward the pup's care.

Thank you for taking care of this poor puppy! And it isn't silly to pray for an animal. At least I don't think it is. :)

I am an animal lover, especially to dogs. I hope karma will find its way to that evil person who injured such a beautiful animal. My heart hurts for him.

You are an ANGEL! What a wonderful act of kindness you and your family showed. May many blessings come your way. And it is NOT crazy to pray for a dog. I pray for mine all the time and he's mostly well.

Wow... I'm blown away by your prayers being answered. This pup is blessed. If no one closer to you steps up, I am in NY, if we can get him here, I would consider adopting him.
