It's Official.........We Are Getting OLD!!!

Saturday, September 12, 2015

The other day, when I was cleaning the Shower/Tub in our largest bathroom, I noticed that there were tiles bowing out on the North wall near the faucets. I called my husband in to look at them and he began by pulling one tile away and by the time he was done, there was about a 3' by 3' hole!!!!! He looked the pipes over carefully and really didn't see any place where they were leaking. He turned the faucet on as high as it would go and still, NOTHING. Then, I asked him if it was possible that the water was wicking from the edges of the tub up into the tiles or even through the grout. This sounded like a real possibility to him, but still meant a very big job with a thorough plumbing check first followed by the wall being completely repaired with a new type of dry-wall that resists wicking and doesn't come all the way to the edge of the tub, followed by re-cementing all of the old tiles!!!!! I could see my husbands eyes glaze over at the thought of all of these steps!!!!!

This past week, I installed a seat in my Mom's bathroom that allows her to slide across it into the tub and remain seated for her shower. She loves it and it isn't anything permanent, which satisfied her landlord. It made me think of our Shower/Bath and the fact that my Spinal Stenosis is NOT going to go away, and I started thinking of a walk-in shower or tub as a possibility for our area instead of repairing what we have which still leaves the higher tub wall for me to scale over the years.

So..........today, we had a young man come to our home to assess our needs. I have always preferred a shower to a bath and when I heard how much the walk-in tubs cost, I became even more enamored of the shower. It is a beautiful unit, very easy to get in and out of, has the option of a hand-held shower handle, is easy to clean, we didn't choose the built-in seat because I forsee myself standing for many years yet (hopefully!) and can use a shower chair if I feel I need one. I LOVE IT!!!!! My husband LOVES that this monkey is off his back!!!! But.........It is one more sign that we are getting older.

It was also a reminder that staying as healthy as possible has MANY, MANY rewards and INDEPENDENCE is one of the most important ones to me.

I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend............ emoticon

Great decision, Patti! I think that a walk in shower is a wise investment, not just for yourself now, but for your future, and for improving your home's value.
There is a very nice housing development of upscale condos across the street from me; the ONLY ones that sell are the ones with the master bedroom on the main floor. Their primary market is older people who are downsizing -- and none of them want the units with the master bedroom on the second floor.

I think that was a smart move, and you will enjoy it. We have to face facts, and it's always better to plan ahead.

Many of us here in Sparks are no spring chickens......( Yours truly)....... but I can see you certainly have your wits about you figuring all that stuff out and also making a really good point..... That we need to take care of ourselves..... I too would still like to be standing for a long time in the shower as opposed to a bath all cramped up🐤.... Here's to many more good years of health and sound mind!...... emoticon

Yup, we are all getting older... Fortunately, you have a better solution so your hubby did not have to go through all that work.

Take care & have another blessed day, Patti! emoticon emoticon

What a great solution to the bathroom problem. At the beginning of your description of the tiles I had an immediate flashback to the first house my first husband and I owned. The floor around the toilet was wet, so he said we needed to replace the wax ring around the base of the stool. No big deal, he says. In the process of taking up the stool he realized that the wet area had rotted the flooring underneath - an area 3 feet by 3 feet. As he was cutting that out some tool bumped the tile along the back of the tub and a few tiles fell of - and we realized that the sheet of tiles was just hung there loose and we were looking at the siding on the outside of the house. By the time we got through we had to install wallboard and tile and new flooring and then he decided to change out the cabinet around the sink and then the material on top of it - oh my, what a job! I'm so glad to hear your solution was much simpler and probably less expensive too! Enjoy the new shower - I prefer a shower to a tub bath too! As for getting old, I am 69 and my husband is 80. We understand that feeling of getting old, or at least older.

My mom and dad had a shower with a built in seat installed in one of their bathrooms when they were in their 50's anticipating needing it when they got older. Boy was it a great idea. When they started going down hill health wise it came in soooo handy. It was also a great selling point when I had to sell the house after they passed.

It will be a great addition to your house and there if you ever need it.
