Spinal Stenosis

Saturday, September 19, 2015

I need your help and advice.............

Have any of you had or know someone who has had surgery for spinal stenosis?

I was diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis this past Spring and chose to try Physical Therapy to help with the pain and immobility. It did help to some extent, but the past few days, I have had pain in my lower back and down into my left leg. This is the classic pain of Sciatica, but what is throwing me off is the general weakness I am feeling in my lower back and in both legs. I also have constant pain in my lower left leg in the front and back. As much as I hate to think of having surgery, it may be my only choice. This is NOT something I would choose to live with for the rest of my life and the doctor who diagnosed me this Spring said that it would only get worse with time!!!

I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions based on your own experience or that of someone you know.

    Hi Patti,

My hubby has gone through the same situation as yourself. He has had two surgeries and only the first one (first surgery done on Feb 27, 2013) was successful as he was back to work in six weeks. The second surgery was on another disk done on May 13, 2014 by a different surgeon and result is not good as he is still in pain, numbness, weakness, etc.

After the first surgery in 2013, he went for PT and it was good for him. In Jan 2014, when he experience pain, numbness, weakness, etc. again, they sent him to another place for PT and it worsen his condition causing him to have permanent nerve damage!

He also had three spinal injections in Jan 20, 2015, Feb 24, 2015 and Mar 31, 2015. Only the first injection gave him relief for three days.
Recently, on Sep 8, 2015 he had two SI (sacroiliac) Joint Injections. The result is he experience some relief.

Patti, have you had a second opinion yet? You have to make sure if you absolutely need a surgery or not. I pray you will find a good surgeon that will give you an honest opinion and one that will perform well if need be.

Take care & have another blessed day! emoticon

So sorry you are going through this. I don't have experience with it. I avoided getting surgery for my foot until a doctor told me that I would get arthritis in the joint if I didn't. I did get a second opinion.

Sorry I can't help Patti, have you entered "Spinal Stenosis" into SPark Teams search?
There are 3 teams that relate to spinal problems- someone on one of those might be more helpful. Or if you Google it there could even be a charity geared up for support and information.

I found thIs one in the UK

My sister has spondylolisthesis (spelled wrong I'm sure). Don't know if that is similar to what you have. It is a degenerative disease of her back and neck. She had surgery about 6 years ago. I wouldn't say it took all of her pain away but it did help some. She is due in January to have surgery on her neck.

Physical Therapy helped in her case only for a short while then surgery was her only option to relieve some of the pain. She still struggles daily with pain.

    Hope you get some relief.

If you do have surgery find a very good nerosurgeon. I hope you feel better soon.

I had spinal stenosis and had extreme pain. Physical therapy, oral pain killers, and steroid injections did not help. I couldn't stand, walk, or even sleep comfortably. I had surgery and it was a miracle cure. Two and 1/2 years later I'm still good.

I have spinal stenosis in my neck. I've never had surgery for it, but did have a ruptured disk that I had surgery on. I had terrible sciatica before it so know just how bad you feel. It won't get better I hate to tell you. Have you had a MRI to pin point the exact cause of the problem? Surgery most often does take care of the problem. Don't wait too long. I have permanent nerve damage in my leg and foot from my ruptured disk. Good luck.

    I suggest a second opinion & electro-acupuncture. It's helped me.
