Having To Stop Physical Therapy

Thursday, October 01, 2015

We had to discontinue my physical therapy as of today. Although my leg strength and balance has improved, my pain has not decreased at all and the knee is now wanting to buckle. Since I really hurt myself by falling this summer, I am terrified that the knee will give out all the way and I could again fall and injure myself.

I currently have two knee replacements. The right knee is a total replacement and the left knee is a partial replacement. Partial knee replacements have a life of 10-15 years. Total knee replacements have a life of 20-25 years. (According to my knee specialist.). My total knee replacement is 13.5 years old and the partial knee replacement is 7.5 years old. The technology for both replacements is nowhere near the quality of the current technology. The knee I am experiencing difficulty with, is the partial replacement. My doctor has been watching both knees carefully. The partial replacement is having issues on the side of the knee that wasn't replaced. The full knee replacement has a post that isn't quite straight. Obviously, I have potential issues with both knees.

Tomorrow, I have an appointment with my knee specialist. The appointment couldn't come at a better time. The doctor will X-Ray both knees from various angles and then he will discuss what he sees with me. My guess is that I will need a full knee replacement on the left knee (This is the knee that currently has a partial replacement.) This is just a guess on my part and I am not a doctor but I can tell by my pain level that something is very wrong. I am not sure if my fall and bruise did big damage or what the issue is. My hip and thigh also hurt and are stiff. Whether this is a related issue or a separate issue, I have no clue. We will see what the doctor says tomorrow.

HOPEFULLY, this Doctor's visit will be GOOD news. I know a knee replacement isn't always good news, but it sounds like it will help you with pain. I was in so much pain before my knee replacements that I could not wait to get them. It does sound like there is something wrong with your knees, and I hope the Doctor can help you find relief.

I got replacements on both knees within 4 months, it was hurting so much. I got through it, and I am glad I got it done.

I hope the Doctor can find you a path to feel better. I still do think that swimming, no matter what is a good option. Maybe not now, but in the future.

Good luck tomorrow. I hope you get some relief.

    Spark on.

I had to do 4 PTs before my knee replacement felt right. I also do aquatics for arthritis as often as I can. Hang in there. At least I can walk now.
