The Gift

My husband and I don't make much of gift giving. The kids get gifts, the grandkids get gifts, but we have a different plan for ourselves. We make plans. We give ourselves to each other and plan how we can spend special time together.
Olive Garden has a great soup and salad lunch. We will visit there a few times.
In the summer, we bought an A Liner camper. Now we are working on where we will travel this summer. Life and love are our greatest gifts to share. The way that we spend our time on earth can greatly enrich those that we love most.

    Love this idea, as well. Hubby and I do take time for each other, but never enough with both of us working full time and caring for two of our grandchildren and our daughter on top of it. But we do spend money on ourselves, when we have it.
    With my job, I travel, so he goes with me when I don't fly. Sometimes when I do, but the company won't pay for his flight ticket, so that's one thing we try to save for when we're aware of when a trip will be planned.

    I am surprised at the number of comments of couples who treat each other to TRAVEL as their gifts of time together. So pleased to share this past time...it's the best gift & sweetest memory of a well travelled & CHERISHED life together! No gifts at our home either!

    I am having a difficult time remembering any of the gifts my husband gave me throughout our married life. But what I do remember is the trips we took. Niagara Falls and the Pocono Mountains along with other side trips.

    Since moving to Mexico we don't decorate apart putting lights in the little palm tree by the front door and we don't give presents. We have a lovely quiet day with a special lunch together and enjoy the white stuff - sand on the beach that is, not snow!

    Hubby and I also make traveling plans together. The gift of time :)
    I use to take my children with me to visit the rest home where my Mother was. Would had out cards and cookies and sit and talk. Now I go there myself, she is gone, but I still like to go. Getting ready to do that today.

    That sounds like a wonderful way to spend time together. More couples should plan time together rather than just letting everything happen.

    I like making a big breakfast on Christmas morning, When my children and my nieces were younger they would perform for us, singing and dancing and rapping. The best times ever.

    Like you, I don't think much about gifts for myself, but I like to put thought into gifts for family and friends. Sometimes it's a one-time gift for someone who has absolutely no expectation - this is usually when I find out someone has a particular pet that I have in my stock of ceramic creations. But my focus is on the 5 grandkids that live with me and the one in Ireland!

    We travel. We give ourselves long expanses at sea to be together, just the two of us and whomever we friend on the ship. There are no phone calls, no texting, nobody can contact us, it just US. Exploring new countries, dancing, celebrating our marriage.

    We gather personal care items and things like stamps, stationary and pens that we give to our local Nursing Home for those who need items.

    Lovely tradition you and John have. I love spending time with my husband too. After 42 years he is still my best friend who can still make me laugh all day long. emoticon

    I love the O. Henry story of the Gift of the Magi. That is something we would do for each other.

    We go to Haven of Rest and give gifts as a family. We review in the Bible stories of the gifts Jesus gave in people. It's a joy to hear the grands version. We laugh, we, love we sing. Tis the seasOn to lift up Jesus & remember what He's done 4 us!

    Hubby and I have cut back on the Christmas gifts to each other. We buy what we need throughout the year, so we don't have a lot on our Christmas lists.
    And as we get older, we are thinking more about saving than spending.

    Love this idea. My boyfriend and I have been thinking of different ways to celebrate that don't involve just buying things neither of us really need. This year we've just moved in together so it's definitely the gift of time together!
