My Old Friend Yoga-It's Not What You Think

Many years ago when I was working out hard every day-running 3 miles 6-7 days a week, kickboxing and strength training twice a week, Zumba or line dancing at least once a week-there came a point when something felt out of balance. I felt like everything I did had such high levels of intensity and I was so focused on my goal, I often pushed through pain without realizing it was taking a toll. I was getting stronger and more fit, but something was missing.

In an effort to find what was missing, I started thinking about what I wasn't doing. As I drove past a local yoga studio on my way to work each day, I thought to myself, "Hmm...I haven't tried yoga. Isn't that just something hippies do? I might be hippy, but I'm not a hippie. How could that do me any good?" Then, I started to think "How do you know-you haven't tried it." So one day I ventured through their front door to get some information. I picked up a brochure detailing prices and the types of classes offered. Amongst the hot yoga and Ashtanga was a hidden little jewel they called "healing yoga". This sounded like just what I needed. And it was. It turned out to be the missing piece in my workout regime. And you know what? I didn't even have to start wearing tie dye or baking "special" brownies!!

So this week as I've been dealing with some old injuries that occurred after the birth of my first child, my old friend yoga said "Hey! Remember me?" The SI joint injury I sustained causes a great deal of lower back and hip pain. So tonight I headed to YouTube in search of yoga for hip pain and I found the perfect compliment to my workouts today. After 30 minutes, I feel relaxed and my hip is feeling much better. Don't let that fool you though. Yoga is no joke. My heart rate increased, I broke a sweat, I worked on my flexibility and I burned 159 calories. I was also reminded that on my worst days when the pain from my injuries makes it too hard and too dangerous to do my traditional workouts, I can always turn to my old friend yoga.

    Thanks for your blog. It sounds like something I may need. I am 62 years young but I have a lot of pain. Back pain, neck pain, knee pain and I have a hard time walking because of foot pain. So needless to say I have a very hard time exercising. I think I will try and research yoga. Maybe it can help me too.

    Thanks for the good information on Yoga. I did some yoga on one of the exercises I did this evening. I did okay but experienced some pain in it. Guess I just need to keep going and let the exercises take care of the pain. Thank you for sharing.
