I used to get gout on occasion and always thought it was from the uric acid in meat (not much wine for me, if any), but I've found that for me it's SODA! After giving up soda for about 8 years I didn't get gout again until I drank quite a bit of plain sparkling water over several days because it's no calorie/no sugar. BAM, I got gout worse than ever. I believe it's from the phosphates. If you've had gout you know it's terribly painful. I am hoping to sound helpful, not preachy.

ps: That was several years ago so I am convinced it was the soda :)

This is an excellent blog! Very informative!

I always heard that gout was a rich man's disease & assumed that due to rich foods that the poor could not consume. However, back in my younger days, my closest female friend's husband had gout & they were far from rich. I do not know what that condition in his body was caused from. He did have a concern with drinking a bit more than one should.

    God bless!

My cousin gets gout too. Her doctor prescribes a pill that she takes and it keeps her in the bathroom for three solid days, not for urine either, BUT at the end of three days, she is just fine. I do not know what the med is though..a good doctor would know..
