There’s No Second Nature By Jackie Stetser
We need to teach children of all ages to love and respect the creatures of this world because there is no second nature. This is all we get!
I take time out of my busy life to give naturalist presentations because I want to see people understand how to walk in the woods without fear. I feel a lot of satisfaction when children show a love and respect for nature and the quiet woods. Our world is becoming too urbanized and domesticated. Kids need to get outside and have fun in open spaces. While there is nothing wrong with a domesticated city life, it is nature that provides solace.
We need to help our next generation understand and protect our natural world. Kids are worth educating, and this world is worth protecting. Don’t you agree?
Currently, John Stetser and I have three powerful multimedia presentations: Aware of the Bear, Give a Hoot about Owls and the AMC Jeopardy Game. When people understand what to do if they meet a bear on the trail, they have confidence taking their children on the AT. When kids watch footage of how an owl grows from a chick to a full grown predator, they learn to listen to the sound of the owls at night and respect and preserve the owl’s place in this world. When a crowd gathers to be a part of the AMC Jeopardy Game, and learn AMC history and the Hiker’s Code, I believe that I have helped fulfill the AMC vision for Recreation, Education and Conservation of the great outdoors.
Giving the Naturalist Presentations is part of our mission to keep parts of this world wild, and helping people to understand, to enjoy and to protect nature.
