Glad to gain 10 pounds..

Wednesday, February 01, 2017

Last year was devastating. Cancer showed up in 2 lymph nodes in upper abdomen. Had 16 rounds of chemo. Dr said not working, stopped treatment and gave me a list of hospices. Was in such terrible pain. DD and her DH kept my appt to see Dr. He told her my CT scan showed cancer in my spine. NOT!!!! He didn't tell me that.

She took me by ambulance to the hospital that her Ob/Gyn practices in. She had obtained all my records and gave them to her Dr. Further CT scans showed no cancer. Spent 70 days total in hospital between last week in Apr and finally coming home for good on Aug 2nd. I had several in and outs during that time.

My new normal is a Supra Pubic Catheter, a Colostomy and a Nephrostomy tube in my left kidney. Not fun things to take care of, but it beats the alternative. Having Vaginal Cancer and the damage the cure (Radiation and Chemo in 2015 and 3 types of Chemo in 2016) did it was necessary.

Started out 2016 at 188 lbs. Lost 20 more during my chemo treatments. When I went into the hospital, my taste buds were messed up. Nothing tasted good. Hardly ate. Even had someone bring food in that I normally liked and only took a few bites. Then I knew it wasn't the hospital food. Lost 38 lbs in 2 WEEKS. My sister came to visit and didn't recognize me.

When I finally came home I weighed 130 and looked like death warmed over. Had great nurses in the hospital. When I was readmitted later in July there were some that asked what I was doing back. Even the non-nurse personnel who took me to Interventional Radiation recognized me.

Have had a lot of PT and am getting stronger each day. Bought new clothes, bagged up old and took to Goodwill. Now with all these new clothes and having put 10 lbs back on I will have to watch it. I did want to lose weight over over the years, but not this way. I'm glad I had the extra weight to lose.

Had a PET Scan In July and again in Dec with no evidence of Cancer. Will repeat every 3 months to monitor it.

Hoping to have a better year in 2017.

Deanna

    Dear, Dear Deanna,
I am sending you prayers & love. I am so glad you have shared your story. More important, I am so glad you are in remission. God Bless the care givers.
I have a dear friend who has survived Malignant Melanoma (15y). She, like you & I, batted the extra weight for years. After, chemo & trials... she was down to a size 6. We had a banquet to attend. I went shopping with her & we picked out the slinkiest, sexy gown we could find. She was gorgeous. Like you said... "C" is no way to lose weight.
Cheers to an amazing 2017!! Live each day to 'your' fullest.

Hang in there. My husband and I are currently at Mayo Clinic for his 3-month check-up. He lost about 50 pounds with his cancer surgery, went through the lack of appetite that you suffered through, and is definitely on the mend. His first 3-month check-up showed no cancer, and we are hoping for great results again tomorrow. He also had cancer in two lymph nodes. Our approach is to eat healthy, especially vegetables, and to read and put into practice what we learn about the foods that help the immune system. Our own bodies can heal us if we give them the best fuel. You and my husband are in my prayers. You can do this.

What a rocky road you've traveled. I'm glad you have beaten the "beast". It takes a lot of strength to go through all that. Now you can work on staying well.
