Progress Update #1

Thursday, February 23, 2017

Yesterday, hubby took me for a four week check up at the orthopedist's office. He was pleased that the wounds look better and that my knee is beginning to improve. He said that the wounds will take a long time to heal. emoticon When I asked if I could go out in public he said yes but make sure wherever I decide to go doesn't have an issue if I gush blood. Oh great! That eliminates just about everywhere. I don't know if he was trying to be funny or what, but I fail to see the humor in it. I was more concerned about me picking up bacteria and a new infection. The good news is, I am now allowed to try to take a shower.

The occupational therapist came today and she helped me practice getting in and out of the shower. I had a little trouble getting out of the shower because the door is unusually narrow. We practiced several times and I'm confident that if I go slow, I will be okay. Tomorrow, my self care aid will help me take a shower. I hope the nurse comes afterwards to redress my wounds.

The highlight of my day was my session with the physical therapist. I am making slow, positive progress! I am now able to get in and out of bed with little or no difficulty. (The bed is higher than the normal height.) I am walking much better too. Tomorrow the therapist will take me for a short walk outdoors. The big news is that on Monday, my knee bend measured 75 degrees. That was a huge disappointment. With the new pain medication the doctor gave me yesterday, I am able to move around so much better. That was reflected in my bend rate which was 92 degrees today! The therapist worked my knee really hard today. I was able to tolerate the movement with the new medicine. The surgery, with all of my complications, requires very vigorous therapy but the complications set me back by 2-3 weeks. The vigorous therapy prevents the growth of extra scar tissue. I was terrified that my slow therapy pace was going to cause me to need another short surgical procedure to break down the extra scar tissue. Now it looks like that won't be necessary. (Fingers crossed.). That was exciting!

The down side of the slower therapy pace is that I will be unable to attend my dear aunt's celebration of life memorial service. I will also be unable to attend my daughter's bridal shower. My daughter said we may be able to connect electronically so I can participate by using FaceTime. I'm bummed at not being there but it will be better than nothing. These are two important events that I'm so upset to be missing. My goal now is to be ready to attend my daughter's wedding in April. I will take it one day at a time, one step at a time.

I'm so glad you got a positive report!! Please know..i had major complications with my replacement and had to stay in bed for 8 weeks..with little to no movement (I had a CPM machine but was only allowed to have it set to 40 degrees. No weight on the leg for 8 weeks and no bend besides the CPM) and i never needed the scar tissue operated on. So think good thoughts...and i hope you can do the facetime for the shower!!
