Progress Update #5

Wednesday, March 08, 2017

I had my 2 week follow up with my primary doctor late this afternoon. He was pleased that I have done quite a bit of healing but disappointed at the healing rate behind my knee. The location of that wound alone will slow the rate of healing. The doctor wants me to make sure that I keep the area clean and dry. The other wounds are healed on the surface of the skin, with the exception of one small area. Unfortunately, the area under the surface surface of the skin, is very hard and painful. I need to use warm compresses on the whole area 3-4 times a day in order to soften the hard areas. This area is the source of much of my wound pain.

My knee itself is improving. The incision is healing nicely despite the expected swelling. The knee swelling leaks downward every time I am vertical, thus causing the swelling of my foot. I was worried about my foot swelling so much. It was a big relief to know what causes all the swelling. I will need to ice and elevate my leg during the course of the day.

Part of my infection has cleared up. Yay! The other part, will need another round of antibiotics. Boo, hiss! The residual cough, especially in the morning and any time I'm fatigued, hasn't cleared yet. Hopefully, it won't be too big of a deal. The trick will be to get rid of the rest of the infection before any other issues pop up.

The doctor told hubby and I that we need to be much more aggressive in dealing with the wounds and infections. He gave me a list of things that I need to do repeatedly throughout my day until I am healed. It feels good to be able to participate in some sort of action plan. I still have a long way to go until the wounds are healed but I am up to the challenge. My orthopedist will check my knee on March 22nd and my primary will check my overall health for everything else, at the beginning of April. I will do everything on the list to promote healing.

Curiosity question for you ... are they using any silver infused gauze for your wounds? My mother was diabetic and with really stubborn wounds they would use silver infused gauze. I know they're expensive. But, they're great when it comes to preventing infection and promoting healing.

Happy to hear that some things are progressing and glad the doctor is providing clear guidance for you and your hubby to address the wounds requiring more aggressive attention.
