Democracy dies in darkness

I have been asked by friends and family to give the political posts a permanent rest. I can't do it. It is not a noble thing to ignore evil and ignorance. It is wrong to ignore hurtful, sinful statements. Trump has made some decisions which are bad for America. Why ask me to be silent?

Democracy lives in unity. When we learn to both speak up and listen to each other, then we can learn to work together too. We can all speak, we can all listen respectfully, and we can work together. An educated, informed population of caring people will preserve democracy!

I totally agree with you. Politics and religion always light the fireworks.

I try very hard at work to keep my mouth shut - but, sometimes I just can't help it. I am applying to get my social security payments ASAP (I'm of an age to not be penalized) - because I'm afraid the wrongfully elected government and cronies will bring it crashing down - or missiles crashing down.

I believe everyone should be able to say pretty much what they want in their blogs (except racism and things like that). If people don't like it, they can skip reading it. If they make hurtful negative comments, I delete them. If someone writes hurtful things in their blogs &/or comments, we can always report them to SP. Get a grip people, we are not sheep.

We should all be able to express our opinions. And you're right, if people don't speak up, nothing will change.

I have a saying that "the people get what they deserves and not what they want" The majority vote someone in and them find that it is not what they want. How many times have we done that!

There is no answer to this but I would like to know if you have one.

Guy Fawkes come back all is forgiven LOL

You are entitled to your opinion and to be able to express it! You certainly are not as negative as some of the posts I have seen on FB. Keep on expressing yourself - thanks for sharing!

emoticon as well, everyone is allowed their opinion, and everyone can choose to engage or not as they see fit. If others don't agree with your postings, they can either engage in debate, or move along, it's not hurting anyone to speak your mind.

You are correct. By allowing only one opinion hold sway over everyone else just because it was said loudly, or repeatedly, or crudely or simply because it was the last thing said does not make it right. When people use "manners" as an excuse for backing down from a bully, then they are only hastening their own inferior position to a dominate force that they will come to regret later. Why wait for things to get "real bad" before you finally feel the need to change it. Look around you at the world. It's full of people trying to dominate everyone else. At loss of morals, integrity, property, finances, freedom, and life itself. There's too much at stake to ignore loss of freedoms that this country has earned through the decades. Why do you think this country is great right now? It's because we hold ourselves to the standards of the Constitution.

No matter who is leading the government we need to review the issues and critique the decisions that harm people, take away rights, disenfranchise, or reduce the quality of life for the poorest.

I am not an American -- just a "guest" here on Spark People -- and there seems to be a consensus of "no politics" here.

Without commenting about American politics, I would say that "freedom of expression" is an important value in democracies.

Great post!! you are so right!! It should be people over partisan politics. Politics has resorted to name calling and that is never good when attempting to have a serious discussion of the topics. We all need to put that aside and come together to get the work done in a way that benefits everyone. Sadly don't see that happening any time soon. emoticon

OH it's a fine balancing act indeed, but I do agree that if we are able to speak our beliefsk and listen to othersk then we can find the middle ground that honors both views.
HUGS and thanks for posting this. It is so important in this day-age.

Your point is well taken - I tend to avoid politics because the way certain people close to me act just boils my blood........d**med shame!

Sadly, we may *never* learn ....... I think it's all about peoples' egos, which just makes things worse!
