Friday a home nurse came to check out my grandma because we are starting up home physical therapy again. She takes her oxygen and it was 82. We got scared because we check it all the time with ours and its always high 90s. She pulls out her other one and it too was 82. We put our on her finger and it read 97. We were confused and scared so we took her to the hospital. Turns out her oxygen was fine but they still went and did blood tests.
The tests show that she has Troponin in her blood. This is released when someone is having, had, or will soon have a heart attack. Her CO2 was also high. Saturday she was asleep all day and nothing was waking her up. She didnt even move when they took blood. We were getting scared because of that and the fact that we still knew nothing about if she had a heart attack or not. Sunday she was also on a CPAP and oxygen.
Sunday we got a call in the morning that she was awake. We quickly got dressed and headed to the hospital. She was still on oxygen but she was talking (she sounded drunk). Because of her dementia her speech was getting bad, lost for words a lot, but over the past few months she just stopped talking. Here and there she would say one or two words but never tried to say a sentence.
Monday we were waiting for a test on her heart to see if it was a heart attack or not. NO HEART ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Turns out it was just hypertension. Her CO2 numbers are still high and shes still on oxygen so shes staying in the hospital till the numbers are where they want them to be.
After the hospital she will be going to a nursing home for a week or two for physical therapy. This is if her insurance OKs it. In the past they didnt and we werent ready for her to come home yet. We hope she goes because 1. she needs it and 2. we need the time to get the house ready. There is soooooo much to do.
During all of this me and my aunt were talking and we need to change so much. We are going on a low sodium, heart healthy diet. I hate that we knew this years ago and just ate whatever. We also never kept up with her physical therapy. She would fight us a lot. We were also tired a lot and we just forgot.
Im going to make up a schedule for when to do everything and a spreadsheet to track her heart rate, blood sugar, and oxygen. We just need to be more responsible and focus on helping her.
This was also a kick in the butt for me and I need to focus on my health. I need to get healthy so I can take better care of my grandma. So much is going to change this month but it will all be for the better :)
