Progress Update #15
Wednesday, May 17, 2017
I am now 16 weeks post op. It has been a long and painful recovery. I'm in my 4th week of outpatient physical therapy. Yesterday, for the first time, I felt like I was making progress. I'm pushing myself, sometimes a little too much, to achieve more. All of the scarred areas are still quite painful. Sigh! My last open wound is close to being closed. The orthopedist said I can go into the pool now but he's not the one who will risk infection, I am. No thank you! I'll wait until that area fills in and be safe rather than sorry.
My visit, last Wednesday, to the orthopedist was interesting. He was pleased with my progress so far. I questioned that and he amended his statement. He said, "With the amount of soft tissue damage you had, I'm pleased with your progress." That was better because my progress has been agonizingly slooowww. The doctor checked my scars on my leg. He told me to make sure I am massaging them. I asked about the painful scars on my bottom. He told me to massage those too. He said that he thought they would break down over time. I disagree but I am willing to try massage - anything to reduce the pain!
I am still frustrated with my lack of stamina. I tire easily or at least it seems like it to me. I am now able to walk around the grocery store, using a push cart. That is a big deal for me. Pushing the shopping cart allows me to walk with my weight more evenly distributed. I like that because my good leg gets awfully tired sometimes. It also gives me a feeling of independence which has been sorely lacking in my life for the past several years. It is a great way for me to safely get a walk into my day.
