Progress Update #17

It has been a while since my last blog. The big news is, I am now back in the water for water workouts! After over two years away, due to poor health, it feels good to float around in the water. I am also cleared to ride the recumbent cycle for up to ten minutes.

Friday, I finally graduated from physical therapy! Yes, at just short of 20 weeks post op, I completed physical therapy and move on to my new home therapy plan. I even got a T-shirt as a parting gift! How much fun is that?

On a more serious note, I am still having pain and numbness in my lower leg. I still walk with a fairly pronounced limp and my scarring is still a painful issue. I am still seeking answers about what caused my complications but it seems like the hospital isn't going to be forthcoming. I really would like to know what caused all of the hideous open wounds behind my leg and all over my bottom so that it would never happen again. How can I avoid something if I don't know,what it is?

I was finally cleared to have an MRI on my cervical spine. I had the test this past Thursday, almost exactly 18 months after two fingers, the outside of my left hand and part of my wrist became numb. I have pain under the left shoulder blade and down the left side of my neck. I have had several EMG tests (nerve conduction tests) done that indicate an impingement in the ulnar nerve. The problem is that the tests didn't show where the impingement occurs. Thus, the need of the MRI. My neurologist said she also may want an additional EMG done to measure any further changes.

This issue had to be put on the back burner while I dealt with three joint replacements and all of the resulting complications. Since the numb hand/neck issue has gone on for so long, I have a fear of it turning into something permanent. My neurologist hasn't been too happy about the fact that treatment had to be delayed but agreed that stopping the progression of the bone disease was much more pressing. It seems like there is always something!

My physical therapist worked with me as I started back into the water. I found this very helpful since I really needed guidance regarding what I can and can't do. I have to avoid exercises that stress my left arm and neck and I must use caution when dealing with my hips and knees. This means watching my body position/form, the length of workouts and how strenuous my workouts are on my body. I must exercise mindfully. Progression will be slow and there is no room for pushing myself too quickly. I am supposed to contact my physical therapist if I run into any problems or if I have any questions. I am so lucky to have her watching my back!

    There likely isn't one particular thing that resulted in the complications. Not knowing your health history, I wouldn't even venture to speculate (not that you asked anyone to ... emoticon ).

    But, given my own experience and the experience of family members, I know underlying autoimmune conditions (inflammation, insulin resistance, hypothyroidism, diabetes, etc.) are a serious impediment to healing. A surgeon can do everything right and not get the surgical outcome expected because the patient's body simply doesn't have the capability to heal itself and complications result from the impaired healing process.

    Hoping the MRI will help identify a plan of action to support further recovery for you. So, happy you are back in the pool!

    I have a pool in my back yard. I have a bad right hip. It has a lot of arthritis. I have read that exercising in water is good. I am going to my orthopedist tomorrow, but in the meantime, I am going to google some pool exercises. I only have an 18' round pool, so I can't exactly swim laps, but some stretching in the pool may be possible.
    What kind of surgery did you have? Sounds awful. Keep on trying. That's the main thing.
