What a summer

Wednesday, August 09, 2017

Back in May my grandma was going back and forth from hospital to nursing home. Since then she has been doing a lot better. Shes able to get up by herself but she still needs the walker. Shes eating a lot better and is talking more.

She has dementia. It hit her hard back in June of 2014 and over time it went from forgetfulness to sneaking out of the house to up all night to falling out of bed and now to not being able to walk without some form of help. For almost a year now she has needed help getting up. Im on one side and my aunt on the other. I have to use my right side because I broke my left arm when I was a kid and had to have surgery so I got some scar tissue and slight nerve damage. Its the mid forearm so when someone grabs there or any pressure is put there it hurts and shoots up to my hand. So with that said Ive noticed how much toner my right arm is than my left. My right leg is also looking better than my left leg. I really need to even out :)

While my grandma was in the nursing home I was able to go to the gym a few times but since being home I havent been back. Not sure how it started but we havent been getting to bed till 11 and sometimes even 1230. I get up at 6 during the week so we can get grandma on the toilet before my aunt head off to work and I usually go back to sleep for a couple hours. Sometimes I dont because of housework I want to get done before the girls I babysit wake up OR because grandma decided to stay up. So I have been soooo tired for almost 2 months. Since Ive been so tired I forget to move food over to thaw and forgetting to add things to the grocery list. Our fridge and pantry over these months have been very sorry. So we've been eating out a lot more than I would like.

We've been trying to get to bed at a good time, 9 would be so damn nice, but its hard. We look at the clock and its 7 something and then before we know it, its 1040 something. How the hell does time move that fast? Im trying to get dinner ready right when my aunt gets home but we still get to bed late. I feel like we need to set an alarm to let us know we need to start getting ready for bed.

The plan is to have lights out by 930. I need to start up my at home exercises in the mornings. Once I have all my energy back and Im sleeping better I need to plan out when its the best time for me to go to the gym. I really need the energy and focus to think about what Im fixing. My food needs to be so much more healthier.

Along with all of this my aunt is also about to lose her job. Her department is moving to North Carolina and there is no way we can move. She is unsure if she wants to move to a different department or new job all together. Either way she wants to drop some pounds so she has better, nicer, more choices in clothes. We are going to try as hard as we can but come Jan 1st things HAVE to change. I picked that date not because thats the most popular date but because its after the Holidays.

Change is hard but once you start to stay focused and not give up then after awhile the change has now become your norm.

Hard to adjust to a new normal. Similar story with my grandparents aging over the last decade. Don't be hard on yourself. You are investing your time and love in another's soul. That will take priority and change the norm, and that's ok- it's worthit
