October 7, 2017 SELF-EXAMINATION
It is pretty easy to do a self-examination of our lives. But it is not always accurate. The reason being is we may miss something because it is familiar. We may make excuses and say it isn’t a huge problem. We may believe everyone else is doing it so why can’t we. We may feel we deserve whatever it is we are doing because of everything we have to go through.
When others examine us and give us feedback about our actions and words, we may become resentful and take it wrong. Their assessment of us may be bias from their feelings about us. Or they may only see the outside and not notice we have a major issues on the inside.
When we attempt to search for any pride in our hearts or seek feedback from others who are close to us in our everyday lives, we may miss something important. But when God examines our lives, He looks at our hearts. He knows our thoughts. He knows secret plans. He can reveal to us anything we need to turn from that is doing us and others harm.
Luke 16:15 “Then he said to them, ‘You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.’” (NLT)
1. List ways you have tested your motives.
2. Write down what others see in you.
3. Know God knows your secret thoughts and desires.
4. Ask Him to reveal to you what is wrong in your life.
Dear Lord, we may can fool ourselves with excuses on why we do wrong. We may can fool others by covering up the truth. However, we know we can’t fool You. You know us inside and out. You know what we are doing that we shouldn’t do. You know what we aren’t doing that we should do. Help us today to step away from pride and excuses and turn to You. We want to live the life You created us to live. We want to live blameless and pure and giving lives. Help us today, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Others may can give us an assessment of ourselves but they don’t see what’s on the inside.
Psalm 44:21 “God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart.” (NLT)
If we want a true and thorough examination of our life, we need to go to God and ask Him to point out anything we are doing wrong.
Psalm 139:24 “Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” (NLT)
God knows what we plan and think. He knows what truly lies in our hearts.
1 Chronicles 28:9 “For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought.” (NLT)
God knows our hearts and can help us to know what we need to do to have a right heart for Him.
