October 27, 2017 OUR OWN DESIRES

I don’t feel like it. I don’t want to. I’d rather not. There is something wrong with these three statements. They all begin with I. They start off with pride. There may not be an “I” in the word team but there definitely is an “I” in pride. Right smack in the middle. When we allow our I’s to get in the way of what we need to do, we are going to go through life accomplishing nothing of great value. God has a plan for us and that starts with humbling ourselves, focusing on Him and helping others. We should stop sinning and start doing what is right. God promises we will be prosperous when we do these things.

SCRIPTURE:
Daniel 4:27 “So then, Your Majesty, follow my advice. Stop sinning, do what is right, and be merciful to the poor. Then you will continue to be prosperous.” (GNT)

ACTION STEPS:
1. Write about a time you didn’t feel like helping someone.
2. List the things you did to avoid helping out.
3. Know God wants you to take the “I” out of your vocabulary.
4. Start looking for ways to serve others, obey God and give to the poor.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, help us to see we are getting nowhere when we are constantly focusing on us and how we feel. Help us to see we are only thinking of ourselves when we snap at others and refuse to help them. We want to turn from our sins and pride so we can better serve You and others. Help us to stop sinning, to start doing what is right and be merciful to the poor as You have commanded us to do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

REMEMBER:
After we realize we are not the center of the universe, we will remember we are put on this earth to serve others.

We can live for us or we can live for God. It’s our choice.

Sinning and selfishness should be put behind us when we choose to live for God.

It is possible to stop sinning and do what is right when we humble ourselves before God.

We are called to live as God’s obedient children and strive to learn from His word on how to completely live for Him.

FOCUS:
1 Peter 1:14 “So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.” (NLT)

When we know God, we know there is a better life in store for us which is about giving and serving and obeying Him.
